Owner description: A museum explaining the political conflict that has shaped the city and the country: a must for those unfamiliar with Northern Ireland's war-torn past.
Reviewed 14 August 2014

The displays, videos, films, and written material provide a detailed, easily understood, and balanced history of the conflict between the Irish and the British dating back to the 1500s and continuing to the peace that exists to the present (and I hope will continue to exist). I learned much more about the conflict and have a much better understanding of the divisions between the two sides. I usually get "museumed out" after about an hour, but the 90 minutes we spent here seemed like only 15 minutes.

I liked this museum which I would rate as good - it had good displays and told a good and sustained narrative. It was better than average as it had helpful staff but I would would not say it was very good. A good solid good and value for money

The museum was great. It had local History from Norman settlement to the Troubles of Northern Ireland. Very interesting as I am from Australia. The museum also had a Spanish ship wreck area as well.

We started our day in Derry in the Tower Museum and I'm so glad we did as it really set the scene for understanding the walls and the history of the city. This Museum has really got it right in terms of the layout, the mix of audio/visual displays, artefacts and information. We were totally enthralled by the story of Derry which unfolds as you walk through the ground floor displays, and it did what the best museums do - entertain and educate at the same time.

After spending a good couple of hours on the ground floor, we took the lift up to the top floor and then worked our way down, looking at the displays relating to the Spanish Armada - again, done well and in an engaging way. You'll need a cup of coffee after all this - luckily there are lots of places just outside the museum, including the Guildhall, which has a great café serving excellent cakes.

If only all museums were this good. The displays on the history of Derry are so well done, with an engaging mix of information, objects, and audio-visuals. It makes the complex history of the city and its people come alive. The display in the tower on the underwater archaeology of the Spanish Armada wreck was a captivating blend of history, shipwreck and diving exploration. One of the best shipwreck displays I have seen anywhere. And tons of good activities for the kids. The staff were fantastic and enthusiastic. Highly recommended!
