Quaint and interesting property with hard working foreign staff and weak management who failed to respond to a problem we had. When we were served with a jug of soya milk that was "off" (had the consistency of yoghurt) on our first morning of a 2 night stay, although this event was very unwelcome and surprising, the matter could have been solved to our satisfaction had we been able to speak to the manager. However we were told there was no manager available and some hours later the manager phoned and said she was too busy to see us then but would the next morning. Long story but eventually we spoke to the manager who claimed the "Faulty Towers" reason for the mistake at breakfast, the previous day, was the foreign worker's English ...("He's from Barcelona" said Manuel). More seriously, the hard working foreign worker told us the milk was served from a packet that had been opened last week, but then assured us it would be alright because he had checked the use by date on the packet which was December 14. So that was OK then according to him. So my view is that the management are using cheap foreign workers, making them work hard but not giving them sufficient training in basic food handling. Furthermore, I have concerns about how food is being stored generally in the kitchen if such a basic fact of food storage is unknown to one of their kitchen staff. The manager made further criticisms of the worker and denied that the milk was poured from a week old container, but I'm afraid I did not believe her. So yes the hotel is quaint, yes the grounds are lovely and yes the rooms are clean. But details are not always maintained, such as the broken ironing board in our room, the noisy boiler outside our window that kept us awake and £19 for 2 tiny glasses of 10 year old port... you have to be joking, but most reprehensible of all is managers who hide from guests who want to complain about something.
