“Just what we hoped for!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2009

We wanted somewhere relaxed and comfortable to celebrate our mum's birthday and we got the perfect result at the Beech Hill. Everyone there was friendly and helpful, ever pleasant and ready to answer any local questions we had.
The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and breakfast plentiful. Dinner was very enjoyable and the only criticism would be that while the dining room was made cosy with the drapes down, it didn't take advantage of the very pleasant grounds which could be lit to wonderful effect.
A very pleasant couple of days and thoroughly enjoyed by our birthday girl - a lovely touch by the chef at dinner - thank you!

my husband and i stayed here for a saturday night, very very basic, dingy and drab.
we had sunday lunch, which was terrible, duck was burnt to a cinder, lamb and beef not tender, portions very small, they didnt even get the dessert sticky toffee pudding right it was burnt.
i forwarded an email to them but 4 weeks later never got a reply !!
enough said !!
this would hardly pass for a 2 * hotel.

This is a nice hotel but not quite what I'd expected from the webiste which is a little flattering. It's photogenic but not quite as posh it seems. The room was clean and well-appointed but dated and oddly shaped. We had no bath and a uninspiring bathroom. The corridors were noisy and cold and the public rooms were old fashioned and granny-like at times. The food at the New Year Gala was a complete rip-off which has made me grade the stay at average. We paid £70 each for a series of mediocre dishes and a drafty table. On the second night we ate in the restaurant again and I felt it was overpriced for the quality of the food. The breakfast was OK but mass-produced. The best part was sitting in the cosy bar/lounge by an open fire. That was relaxing and reminded me of holidays with my mum and dad in the 1970s.
The hotel is in its own grounds which is nice but if you don't have a car it will be very difficult to reach. There is a loyalist area about half a mile away with painted kerbstones and union flags which reminds you that you are in Northern Ireland and through which you must drive to reach the main road. Derry is a good 15 minute drive and to be honest is a grim town with a whiff of actual danger to it.

  • Liked — Just chilling out in the sleepy public rooms
  • Disliked — paying £70 each for mediocre food at New Year.

Lovely grounds, friendly staff, relaxing atmoshphere. If you want to chill out for a couple of days, eat good food and relax this is just perfect. It may not have high tech tvs, didn't even ask about broadband, & old furniture but is exactly as we had expected. Rooms were clean and after a lot of people booked out on New Years we were moved to a larger room without even asking. This is the service a lot of the more contempary hotels are lacking. Service was a little bit slow but very apologetic, but it is not the sort of hotel you would be rushing in. About 2 miles outside the city, you wouldn't walk at night but taxi was only £5 in. Food in hotel was of excellant quality, supplement for kippers at breakfast, & gas fires when real log fires would have been fabulous in the old fireplaces. We booked in for an extra night as it really was a lovely setting. We would stay here again and recommend.

Arrived in outstanding surroundings which was so much better in reality than expected from picutures.

Very romatic situation in the restaraunt, looking over the gardens, with pond.

The team were friendly and welcoming with a "nothing too much trouble "attitude.

Food was outstanding, and service in the restaurant just right.

Rooms were traditional in decor but recently done, so clean, fresh and ample space, warm and everything to hand that you would expect.

The Bar/Longe is just what I wanted, quiet, no loud music, nice fire and friendly.

So while on business would be delighted to book for a romantic weekend, especially as we enjoy great food and"the nicer things in life"!

PERFECT!

Was at a recent wedding at this hotel. The hotel I believe is a former country home and as such has that age and character about it. If you are looking for the ultra modern then go somewhere else. If you want a family run - hands on - friendly - lovely character - great food and defo great place to get married - then this is the place for you. Grounds are fantastic with RC church at the gatehouse. We had a wonderful wedding here and found the staff and service to be excellent...
Good enough for Bill Clinton ... good enough for us .

I booked the Beech Hill for a two night stay for my wedding anniversary on the 18th and 19th of August.

A nice friendly welcome on arrival from the reception desk staff and they had put us in the master suite which was a real treat to say the least. My wife was surprised as was I to find one of the most luxurious rooms I have ever been in.

The room was large in size with a king size bed, flat screen TV, two bathrooms, a living room with its own large flat screen T.V and numerous large comfortable sofas to relax in.

Initial impression was a clean, fresh smelling and spotless room which was well maintained and tastefully decorated. The room was well equipped and included data ports, plenty of electric sockets and an ironing board and trouser press. Oh yes and an I-POD docking station, brilliant idea I thought. The high light for my wife was the large walk in dressing room which she really loved. I think if she could have fitted it into her suit case she would have.

The bathroom was gleaming and had a good selections of soaps, shampoos and lotions along with a sewing kit, shoe-shine kit and shower cap. It was nice to see that they have retained these things when so many of the large chains are pennypinching and no longer provide them.

Our friends from England joined us on the second night with their 8 month old daughter, they had a family room which had a ajoining room as well as a cot beside their bed, nice touch.

Before dinner we sat in the lounge area which had large comfortable armchairs and a lovely fire which made it very atmospheric.

We ate in the hotel's Restaurant on the second night. I had pate to start with and it had a really smooth texture and to accompany it was fresh breads which when asked where made on site, fantastic. All meals were prepared fresh to order and I found them to be one of the best meal experiences I’ve had. It seemed to be busy on both nights and many people sounded to be local which is always a good sign. Breakfast was served in the restaurant and again the service and quality of food was of a high standard.

Overall, the service was outstanding. The major chains should go to the Beech Hill to see good customer service in action. Too many times I find other major chains find it difficult in interacting with their customers and when they do it is limited to a few phrases learnt parrot-fashion which they repeat to every customer. It is refreshing to see that the staff have not gone down this route are all genuinely friendly and still treat their customers as GUESTS. They seem to go that extra mile to provide top class service and a superb place to stay.

My wife can’t wait until our next wedding anniversary so we can visit again. The best anniversary I have arranged, (got lots of brownie points). I can certainly recommend this hotel, keep up the good work.
