“One of the best railway journeys you can have”

Londonderry - Coleraine Railway
Ranked #25 of 140 things to do in Derry

Make sure you sit on the right-hand side of the train on the way up to Derry and the opposite side on the return. The views as you pass the River Bann, north Atlantic, Lough Foyle and River Foyle are fabulous. Clearly you want to check the weather forecast first, however, as there's little point in making this trip on a gloomy, foggy day. We were lucky and had great sunny weather - and in late September too!

but one of the greatest train journeys of the world? I don't think so!

Some nice views and glimpses of lovely beaches and sweeping vistas. A comfortable way to travel between Derry and Belfast, efficient timekeeping etc (as you would expect in 21st century) but agree with previous reviewer - lower your expectations

I travelled on this last week and the scenery from Derry along the coast was fine but nothing extraordinary. I had to change at Coleraine and at Belfast Central to get to Belfast GT Victoria St, don't know if that's normal but I couldn't understand why it was necessary. Takes 2 hr 15 Derry to Belfast cf bus 1 hr 50.

The railway takes in some pretty beaches, and is well worth the trip, but it doesn't meet the hype of one of the great railway trips of the world. Worth doing, but lower your expectations.

We actually completed the entire train journey from Belfast to Londonderry, but had wanted to experience the Coleraine - Derry section for some time . We were not disappointed!
This stretch of coastline is simply stunning, with the beaches looking magnificent in the sunshine.
This surely has to rate amongst the great rail journeys of the world!
