Workhouse Museum and Library

Above the waterside library is this hidden gem. Brilliant 20 minute tour given by Laura offered loads of insight, history and social info. Do not miss this - it is half an hour brilliantly spent and there was no charge! Can't believe I didn't know it was here. Should have been made much of in the year of city of culture.

As this is not the type of thing i would not normally visit this was surprisingly good whilst being a little spooky in the corridor, would like to mention that the staff are great especially Heather who is so enthusiastic about the place.

I agree totally with earlier reviewers. Having heard about it on TV, i came here to see the spitfire exhibit but was really most excited by Laura, the guide, and her stories about the workhouse. Amazingly when I was trying to find the place, a real challenge, most of the culture staff had never heard of either the exhibit or the museum! Shame on Derry City Council for not using this year to promote and exploit these two unique pieces of our history. Instead this museum has been ignored, under resourced and left totally off the map. Half of the original workhouse building has already been lost to ugly private development lets hope thats not the plan for the rest of it. It was both our first and the last remaining workhouse building we have!

My wife and I visited the museum after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor and were glad we did. As has been said before, not that easy to find but when we arrived we had the place to ourselves. This was fortunate because we spent the next 30 minutes in the company of Laura the guide whose knowledge and enthusiasm for relating the history of the workhouse kept us enthralled. In fact Laura deserves the 5 stars on her own.

We visited the Workhouse Museum during a week in Derry and are so glad we did. We had intended to attend the story telling event, planned as part of the Halloween entertainment but realised that it was aimed at children much younger than ours. On asking at the office though, Laura, who is the guide, took us around and treated us to a fantastically informative and interesting little tour. She is a knowledgeable and engaging narrator and managed to present the sadness and hardship of Workhouse life in a really atmospheric fashion, keeping the attention of a mixed age group. I would echo what others have said here about the staff being brilliant.
What does make me sad is that this place is so poorly publicised and sign posted, especially given that this aspect of our Social and Economic History is particularly important at the moment. I visited several years ago, thought it was great then too and assumed that with the Peace Bridge opening the greater accessibility would lead to greater use as a visitor attraction. How sad that this is not happening.
Derry City Council come on.
