“A decent choice for business travellers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2012

I've stayed here twice on business trips and and the it's location, parking and business services make it the best option in the city.
I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic break however, as it is more functional than anything else.

Can't fault this Hotel. Good location with easy parking on site. Welcome receptionist, Brilliant Room overlooking River, Very clean. Dined in restaurant, brilliant value for money on meal deal with wine only £29. That is what I call value. The food was lovely and no complaints. The staff were the friendliest I have encountered my whole holiday in Ireland, well done.

Booked the City Hotel as over in Derry for business. First thing if you have a large car the car park is very tight to turn around in as its under the hotel. Second thing the lift from the car park needs a room key of you can buzz reception. I buzzed and was told its ok now press the button...on several occasions and no luck so had to carry bags up two flights of stairs to reception. On checking in and receiving my room key I go to my room to find they had not programmed it correctly so had to go back down (floor 6) and have it re-done. The room (superior) had a lovely view of the river but was in need of refurbishment with holes around the plug sockets and very basic decor similar to hotels a third of the price!

So far I can live with the above...I then settled into my room and ordered room service. Sirloin steak, followed by a Lemon tart. When the meal arrived everything was only just warm. The steak which was supposed to be medium rare was well done with a peppercorn sauce on a bed of onion mash (strange) with chips...nothing else... desert was supposed to be a lemon tart which when uncovered I discovered was the cheesecake of the day with squirty cream and jam!...again regardless of the strange mix and wrong order the food was edible.

I did not get chance to try the leisure facilities or the restaurant/bar which may have been very good.

I don't think I would stay at this hotel again unless there was no choice...one positive, it is in a good location for the city centre.

Room Tip: Rooms over looking the river are best but at a premium.

We were here for 3 days / 2 nights using the conference facilities and staying / eating here. The meeting rooms were all conference, with tea / coffee / biscuits coming regularly.

Rooms were very comfortable, with ample desk space for work and a lovely view of the river / peace bridge.

Breakfast was a good quality hot & cold buffet, lunch and dinner were equally tasty and the service was very efficient.

All staff at City Hotel were very pleasant and accommodating - they were what made this stay particularly pleasant for me.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the river.

I stayed here Friday & Saturday night past at a conference, all i can say was the staff were absolutely great, friendly, and helpful. Food was beautiful and tasty. Accommodation was good, Basic rooms , ( pillows were very very hard) and room was hot, but with window open and fan on it soon cooled. Towels in bathroom were funny!!! Conference facilities were excellent, the hotel has bus tours, weddings, private parties all going on, but you would not even know the staff were under pressure. i will definitely be back.

Nice hotel for a visit to the City of Derry/Londonderry as the location is so convenient
We travelled by train as a car is not needed in the city and parking is limited to 40 cars at the hotel
It is a plain building which does not do it justice as the inside is warm and welcoming
Very friendly staff we requested a room on the 6th floor and found it looked out at a wall of other rooms with a slight side view of the river we asked to move but the hotel was full so it was not possible
It was a large room with a single and a kingsize bed very comfortable but the bathroom light was quite dim and we asked if they would replace the missing bulb we were told it would be done but it seems it was a maintenance problem and it never was resolved also there was a strong smell of drains in the bathroom but as there was very heavy rain all weekend this may have been a factor |
We were on a bed and breakfast weekend break but due to the awful weather decided to eat in the hotel for dinner which was a good idea as the food is excellent and service friendly and efficient they had a deal of 2 courses and a bottle of wine for 2 for £29 in a nice dining room with good atmosphere Breakfast a buffet with a good selection
Nice leisure area and pool jacuzzi gym etc and friendly staff there
The lower floors will have noise as there are weddings and music from the bar area so the high floors are quiet but very warm it seems the heat rises as there was already a portable fan in our room !
It is an excellent location for all the sights in the city an easy walk and we would definitely recommend this hotel
A visit to the Tower Museum is a must
The Guildhall was closed for renovation when we were there
The Walls and Cathedral are very interesting
We walked back to the station over the Peace Bridge as the link bus to the railway does not run on Sunday !

Room Tip: Choose a high floor if you want a quiet room as lower floors will be noisy with music from bar areas...

Stayed for one night bringing my mum away for a well deserved break. Reception staff were lovely, bar staff were very much untrained (a club sandwich is a club sandwich in every hotel but city hotel which is bread not toasted had to tell the girl it consisted of chicken bacon & salad) & charged individually 60p for a bit of lettuce..! It actually would have worked out cheaper to have it in our room..! apparently u can get a club sandwich (a proper one) in the restaurant..???
The rooms are in need of doing up (they reminded me of a very poor quality premier inn in decor) I paid extra for a superior room of which we received none of the extra benefits ie: bathrobes, we had 2 single beds as requested a twin rm however i thought 2 doubles would be more 4* we found the pillows flat & duvets thin..! A tip source these from the same place the Hilton do..! At night the noise from below was awful we were on the 6th floor..! Overall I feel the hotel could do with an overhaul, the best experience we had was the view from the window were my mum thoroughly enjoyed the view of the peace bridge..!

Dear The-Noodle,
Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback, it’s great to hear you found the staff lovely and the view so nice, but slightly disappointed to hear other comments, it may interest you to know that we take staff training as a core success of our business although a club sandwich is not currently on any of our menus instead all food is prepared fresh as per guest requests

Yours sincerely
