Went here as part of Aberdeen Restaurant Week and had been looking forward to it. When we arrived the dining room (which is lovely) was very quiet and we were happy to be settling down to a relaxing Sunday evening meal in nice surroundings. Sadly, that was the high point.
The pâté starter was ok-ish, if a little underwhelming. However, both our main courses were way below what we were expecting. My fellow diner described his salmon pasta dish as dry and bland, and my own paltry chicken dish was covered in an unseasoned tomato sauce which tasted like it had been poured straight out the tin onto my dish. It also had what were described as roast potatoes, but what were in truth undercooked wedges. It was essentially just really basic, boring food, and not very good.
When you go to an Italian restaurant you want something authentic, tasty and a bit special; not something you could knock-up at home yourself in 15 mins. Rarely do I complain about food in restaurants, but we were so unimpressed that when the waitress came to take our half-eaten plates I felt I had to be honest and tell her we didn't enjoy it at all. I was met with an unapologetic shrug of the shoulders and the phrases "this is Italian food, it's simple", and "taste is taste", basically implying that we didn't know what we were talking about. Between us we have been to Italy many times and eaten in enough Italian restaurants in the city to know the difference between good and indifferent Italian food.
Anyway, this seemed to cause an atmosphere, and the waitress became less-friendly as the evening wore on. We then weren't holding out high hopes for the Panna Cotta dessert and those fears were justified when it arrived, the texture wasn't right and it was more like a gummy Blancmange than any Panna Cotta I've ever had. I couldn't eat it, and barely a word was said at this point when our plates were cleared and we just wanted to get out of there asap.
Ultimately, way overpriced for what they are serving - and this was the reduced Aberdeen Restaurant week menu as well, hate to think what it's like normally. Judging by the response we got when trying to say something they are not used to receiving criticism, either that or they have their head in the sand about the quality of their food.
Speaking about the experience afterwards while we were still hungry we felt as if we had been charged £62 for a glass of beer and wine each, and the privilege of being insulted. Shalln't be back.
