The entrance lobby with it's pool and many different marble columns are an experience in themselves. The art works are varied, interesting and well displayed. Excellent book and gift shop. Close to the main shopping area of the City.

Fantastic gallery, great exhibitions with work by local artists in the yearly Aberdeen Artists exhibition. Unusual purchases can be made in the shop - great for birthdays etc. Cafe is small, but at least there is one!

The first thing to say is that Aberdeen Art Gallery is also a museum while I admit its mostly art. The surprises are on the ground floor, take your coffee or tea in the in door courtyard, the staff in the cafe will transport you tray for you, 'health and safey' but just ask they are great. This for myself is the best space to relax, a light airy space by the fountain, that is if there are no screaming kids, and I am not being agest here. The second surprise is the area behind the courtyard it usually has an special exhibition. The third special on the ground floor is the memorial room which is home to the memorial to the two World Wars, This is not a gloomy space but is located under the dome. It has been described as among the best such memorials in the Uk.
The Art in the Gallery spans the very longest of time spans from the plaster copies if Roman figure sculptures to the present day. There are some wonderful pre-Raphaelites and a good number of Scottish Colourists’ . Tucked away in what are rather gloomy side rooms on the first floor are an enclitic mix of pictures, furniture and sculpture within which you will find something to most people’s liking. In recent years a visiting Italian gent identified a significant work in these very rooms that the staff had not known provenance of before. In early summer the local artist’s society hold an open exhibition with contributor from all over the UK, though mostly from Scotland, similar to the RA Open Exhibition, there are items on show from the professionals and amateurs. It’s worth looking out for this exhibition.
So if you are lugging reluctant kids along ask about the toy boxes which contain items to amuse and park the other reluctant half with a tea or coffee in the courtyard and you yourself enjoy this fine example if what is international and local in Aberdeen Art and just see if the other half has noticed whose sculpture is in the fountain and types of granite represented from all over Scotland as the polished columns in the courtyard. Enjoy it its free..

Aberdeen Art Gallery is one of the best small galleries in the country. The permanent collection is well worth a view, and the regular exhibitions are attractive and well presented. Currently it's Peploe, curated from a variety of locations and with an informative DVD and guidebook. There's a small café, though not very exciting, and a nice little book and gift shop.

I love Aberdeen Art Gallery and regularly meet friends here for coffee and then a look at the latest exhibition. There's a lovely bright atrium area where you can sit with your lunch. The regular paintings and exhibits are always worth a look, but the changing exhbitions make it for me.
