As with most old buildings it reflects on the size of the rooms. Although a double room it was by modern standards small.
Location is very close to the city centre, but what stands out is the Excellent food, really is second to none in the city.

Although there was an initial mix up with reservations, this was quickly and professionally dealt with and we stayed in the suites, which are clean, spacious and well furnished.

We had a company event there during the day and the food, service and hospitality were great throughout.

Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: The suites are awesome!

We enjoyed enjoyed our stay @ Carmelite Hotel, staff very pleasant, clean comfortable rooms, We were on a weekend catching up with Scottish friends, it was our wedding anniversary, the owner recognised this & upgraded our rooms to suites for us & 3 other couples we were with
This made the stay very special
All staff were very helpful & went out of their way to make sure we had what we needed
My husband & friends want to watch the England football match, so they opened up a function room, so they could watch the games without interruptions from the piano playing in the background
I would fully recommend the Carmelite Hotel

Room Tip: All the suites are lovely,

I stayed here with my company for four nights and I found my room to be first class with a large king size bed, excellent large shower and a large bath. The location of this hotel is fantastic, only a 3 min walk to the centre of Aberdeen and a 3 min walk to the pure gym in which I joined for a month so I can train there in my three weeks stay in Aberdeen on business. There was never a shortage of clean towels and the room service was excellent with a turn down service at nights. All in all one of the best stays in Aberdeen in my eight years of staying here.

Stayed here during a business trip to Aberdeen, location is extremely good in a central location pretty much straight across the road from Union Square/train station. The hotel apparently has some lovely suites but I was in a less expensive room on the top floor, the room was ok but a bit small and old fashioned with no central light which made it a bit gloomy. The main problem though was the seagulls which were extremely noisey all night.

Breakfast was very good and led to an overall decent, if not amazing stay.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of a recent stay with us at Carmelite. You are correct in saying we have some stunning bespoke Suites with round beds, cast iron double ended slipper baths, others with hand crafted 'classic regency designed' furniture, as well as 1st floor designer rooms and, 2nd floor Dapper rooms. All these Suites and Rooms, as well as our ground floor bar, grill and event rooms, have been refurbished. The last to complete are our third floor standard rooms, which are due to be refurbished during this year. We are also planning to add new Loft Style rooms and a new Suite with an outside Jacuzzi. Unfortunately, with a Grade B Listed Building, such works do take time, and a necessity to fit these works round the business demands.

Our location within the city centre's Merchant Quarter is one of our great positives. However, being in such a central location, near the harbour, the city does seem to have a large amount of Seagulls....... Suppose its like a lot of other habits - whilst living in city centre, you often become accustomed to the urban noises city alarms, city centre revellers, and yes, sometimes - seagulls.

We can't really manage this factor, but we can offer a range of styles of bedrooms, which subject to our rates and your budget, you may decide to view prior to booking, should you be returning to Aberdeen.

Thank you once again for sharing your comments, and please do reference this reply, should you decide to return to Carmelite in the next few weeks.

Firstly, myself and my husband had stayed here previously and it really was bad. Rooms left dirty etc, but given the location we decided to give it another bash a year later. We did email ahead to express concerns and the receptionist was very lovely and helpful.

We booked here for a night away with our friends, another couple. Was a Saturday that we were staying. I booked both rooms at the same time online. We checked in and given our keys, as we were both checking in at the same point we just grabbed whatever key was nearest to each couples hand.

Me and my partners room was the first stop. It was a nice small room. It had a small bed with a desk, mirror and wardrobe. We had a bathroom that was probably twice the size of our bedroom, with a nice walk in shower.

We then went to the other room which was our friends. There room was HUGE! It had a huge bed with two bedside tables, a wardrobe, dressing table, console table, table and chairs and a sofa bed. Their bathroom was much smaller than ours with a bath and shower.

Pros -
It's a great location.
Was fairly clean compared to our last stay.
TV was nice.
Nice big bathroom with a nice walk in shower.
If I had been in the other room then I would be putting a pro as a nice huge room with plenty of space!

Cons-
Our room was TINY. Like literally a bed, with barely enough space on either side.
We only had ONE bedside table. Come on!
No accessible plugs. One at the bottom of the bed, but nowhere to sit your phone while it charges. So you need to leave it on the floor and hope that it doesn't get stood on during the night!
Bed was ridiculously small. For two grown ups, of a small/ average size, we barely had any space. And mattress was pretty lumpy and uncomfortable.
Bathroom was nice, however I'd say pretty cheaply done. And the shower tray was a bit like razors on your feet!

Overall id say it was a fair stay. It was better than our last experience. I think it's a tad stupid to have two complete opposites of rooms, which cost the exact same price, and allow a group of two couples to have one of each room. Basically we now felt like we've overpaid for the room we had compared to the other room in our group! So if you're booking on a weekend, ask for a big room, because you'll be ripped off if you're put in the room we were in with a tiny bed and hardly any space to get dressed.

Thank you for taking the time to share your extensive comments regarding your repeat visit to Carmelite. Firstly, I am sorry to read your initial stay was disappointing, and pleased you allowed us another opportunity to try us.

Having looked into your comments, you are correct in that we should have paired similar rooms for groups travelling or staying together. Apologies again, however my reservations team believe they have spoken with you regarding reasons as to these rooms been so different. As an independent Grade B Listed Building, I am trying to refurbish the property to a good uniform standard throughout within the Historic Scotland guidelines. Thus far, I have refurbished the 1st, 2nd, floors with some great bespoke Suites and Rooms albeit, restricted somewhat at time with the layout of the original Granite walls. This dictates the sizes of there various rooms, and as such is reflected in our rates. With rates starting from £49 for single rooms, and various offers from £69 for double rooms, sometimes allocation of our rooms go array when others take higher rate rooms, or lower value ones. That's all the quirky things my team need to balance with such a historical building.

I am also concerned to read your comments regarding the bathroom shower trays. We believe you were referring to a 1st Floor bathroom which have designed stainless steel shower plinths that allow water to pass so guests neither see or stand in dirty water. I have personally checked every such shower on that floor and can assure you and all other readers they are perfectly safe and not 'razor sharp'. I would be grateful for you to contact Elaine Beyaz directly at Carmelite 01224 589 101, to advise which rooms this referred to, allowing us to check the health & safety.

I sincerely trust you will revisit Carmelite and please reference these comments at reservation.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Carmelite is neatly positioned in the centre of Aberdeen's Merchant Quarter, which is adjacent to the transport hub of rail, bus, coach stations and harbour. The Merchant Quarter is the "grown up" area of the city, full of independent bars and restaurants, and surrounded by the city's 5 under-cover retail shopping centres. An historical Grade B listed building dating back to mid 1800's, Carmelite has undergone major refurbishment program over recent years, introducing a boutique environment on the ground floor of Carmelite Bar & Grill, whilst the 50 bedrooms offer a mix of "Designer" Suites and rooms on the 1st floor, "Dapper" rooms refurbished end of 2012, on the 2nd floor and comfortable standard rooms on the 3rd floor. These enable attractive rates to suit all budgets. Aberdeen is a commercial city, with limited accommodation mid-week, however weekends offer some fantastic deals making an alternative visitor experience very affordable. The 6 Suites are all different, and very quirky - from round beds in turrets, and gigantic sleigh beds, all designer rooms have cast iron baths, monsoon showers. The "Dapper" rooms have un-cluttered designs with a mix of large monsoon shower rooms, double ended steel baths (some designed with 'no taps'), and black-out window blinds. All the bespoke furniture in these rooms were made by A social Enterprise Company in Dundee, called Dovetail. The 3rd floor standard rooms, although not yet refurbished, offer clean, comfortable accommodation, still with all the usual amenities. All rooms have luxury beds made locally by Social Enterprise Aberdeen Company called Glencraft. Designer "Anatomicals" or "Keiji" bath products, 32/40" LED Samsung Freeview TVs, as well as clocks, iPhone docking stations, tea/coffee making facilities, and most rooms with iron and ironing boards. A room service menu is available during restaurant times. The ground floor also is a boutique environment, quirky with a large open plan lounge and dining area, with informal comfy sofas, a Baby Grand Piano playing at weekends, and a dining 4 Poster Bed. The comprehensive bar menu offers superb cocktails, 12 champagnes, and extensive wine and drinks as well as a bar nibbles food options. Menus cover breakfast and brunch from a "Wake Up till Noon" menu, then an A'la Carte "All Day Menu" available from 12noon through till dinner. There is a Shoppers Menu available till 5pm each day with £8 main courses, and a Market Menu options each evening. There are two event rooms, Library and Balmoral for delegates up to 120, private dining to 50 diners, and Mad Hatter Tea Parties from 20 people. Intoxicating Afternoon Teas are a specialty, as well as Rock & Roll Parties in the 4 Poster Bed. Free wi-fi is available throughout the building, with a PC available for guests' use in the library. ... more   less
