“Going the extra mile!”
Reviewed 10 February 2007

The entrance of the hotel is superbly designed and decorated and I had a warm welcome from the staff. On my first night, there was a few problems with the internet connection in my room and the staff really did all they could not only to sort the problem out but to make me feel comfortable and find an alternative way for me to continue working with my laptop. Special thanks go to Peter, who truly went the extra mile to get my problem sorted. At the end, he called their IT guy but since he coudln't be at the hotel until the next morning, he kindly allowed me to work in one room and then go back to mine for some sleep.
I think the staff is what made my stay really good, they were always ever so helpful and attentive and did their best to help their guests.

My room was not one of the newly refurbished ones but it was impeccable and the bed very comfortable as well. Bathroom was also always kept clean and newly done. The temperature was perfect, and being winter I truly appreciated the good heating offered! plenty of pillows and crispy white sheets. My only complaint (a very little one) is that if you do not leave the room service tray outside your door, they will not collected (it happened twice to me in a one week stay until I started doing that). But nothing major, and as soon as you brought it up with any of the guys at reception they would rectify the problem asap.

Food was superb as well as breakfast. A bit pricey but delicious and of excellent quality none the less, so well worth what you are paying for. I loved the freshly made coffe or cappuccino and the eggs Ballmoral cooked to perfection! I had dinner and lunch several times at the hotel (after long hours at work and as a woman travelling alone, I preferred the safety and comfort of the hotel rather than going out) so I can simply say that food was excellent, freshly made and delicious.

Checking out was also stress-free and without delays, so from start to finish, it was a pleasure to stay at the Carmelite and I would truly recommend it for business travellers (as well to those going to Aberdeen for pleasure).

I would definately come back and check those new suites one day! ;)

  • Liked — The huge bed in my room and all the help I got from the staff, like Peter and Claire. How comfortable the room was and how safe you feel when staying there.
  • Disliked — Furniture in room a bit dated, room service trays not collected and waiter forgot my breakfast order one day!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Carmelite is neatly positioned in the centre of Aberdeen's Merchant Quarter, which is adjacent to the transport hub of rail, bus, coach stations and harbour. The Merchant Quarter is the "grown up" area of the city, full of independent bars and restaurants, and surrounded by the city's 5 under-cover retail shopping centres. An historical Grade B listed building dating back to mid 1800's, Carmelite has undergone major refurbishment program over recent years, introducing a boutique environment on the ground floor of Carmelite Bar & Grill, whilst the 50 bedrooms offer a mix of "Designer" Suites and rooms on the 1st floor, "Dapper" rooms refurbished end of 2012, on the 2nd floor and comfortable standard rooms on the 3rd floor. These enable attractive rates to suit all budgets. Aberdeen is a commercial city, with limited accommodation mid-week, however weekends offer some fantastic deals making an alternative visitor experience very affordable. The 6 Suites are all different, and very quirky - from round beds in turrets, and gigantic sleigh beds, all designer rooms have cast iron baths, monsoon showers. The "Dapper" rooms have un-cluttered designs with a mix of large monsoon shower rooms, double ended steel baths (some designed with 'no taps'), and black-out window blinds. All the bespoke furniture in these rooms were made by A social Enterprise Company in Dundee, called Dovetail. The 3rd floor standard rooms, although not yet refurbished, offer clean, comfortable accommodation, still with all the usual amenities. All rooms have luxury beds made locally by Social Enterprise Aberdeen Company called Glencraft. Designer "Anatomicals" or "Keiji" bath products, 32/40" LED Samsung Freeview TVs, as well as clocks, iPhone docking stations, tea/coffee making facilities, and most rooms with iron and ironing boards. A room service menu is available during restaurant times. The ground floor also is a boutique environment, quirky with a large open plan lounge and dining area, with informal comfy sofas, a Baby Grand Piano playing at weekends, and a dining 4 Poster Bed. The comprehensive bar menu offers superb cocktails, 12 champagnes, and extensive wine and drinks as well as a bar nibbles food options. Menus cover breakfast and brunch from a "Wake Up till Noon" menu, then an A'la Carte "All Day Menu" available from 12noon through till dinner. There is a Shoppers Menu available till 5pm each day with £8 main courses, and a Market Menu options each evening. There are two event rooms, Library and Balmoral for delegates up to 120, private dining to 50 diners, and Mad Hatter Tea Parties from 20 people. Intoxicating Afternoon Teas are a specialty, as well as Rock & Roll Parties in the 4 Poster Bed. Free wi-fi is available throughout the building, with a PC available for guests' use in the library. ... more   less
