“Never fails to please”

This is a restaurant I have visited many times over the years and while the menu may have changed in line with current tastes the 'favourites' have been kept and never fail to please. Plenty of dishes to choose from. Most recent visit was 13th Nov 2013. Food and service always good and relaxing atmosphere.
Good portions and prices not over the top. Good, fairly central location, with parking. Also outside pergola with heaters.

Went for a meal here with friends, the service was good, as was the food. There were a couple of vegetarian options - the sweet potato and chickpea burger is very good. The other people had lamb and chicken. We all enjoyed the meal.

This trip was booked by my wife as a 10th. wedding anniversary present for us in May of this year. She booked a double room.

Having paid for and endured two taxis and a domestic flight, we arrived at the Hotel. From the front the building looks fairly shabby, and somone has made the decision to create an obstacle course in front of the doors out of half dead potted Leylandii and an ashtray. So far not enchanted. In daylight we could appreciate that the grounds are well maintained.

Having got inside we warmed up a bit as the interior is very smart indeed, considerable money has been spent on the restaurant and bar areas. There is no signage telling you where to go to book in and at least two members of staff saw us enter with heavy suitcases and ignored us. We found the reception area, and were directed up two flights of stairs, after the first flight things started to feel like this might not be good. The hideous tartan carpet was covered in decoraters protective film, there were bags of laundry on the landing and it was clear that workmen had taken over this floor. Up we went into the next landing painted in a very bold blue. Into our room which was a twin. This painted in a shocking yellow, not only was the room a twin, but the beds were perpindicluar to each other and about 10 feet apart. We could not even see each other, hardly the 10th. wedding atmosphere we were looking for. This might give the impression that we had a large room, not so. This would best be described as an attic room with angled ceilings and being long and thin. The furniture appeared to be a hoch poch of left overs from other rooms.

Back down to reception, were the manage was bought over. This is were things started to go very wrong. The managers main concern appeared to be to separate himself from any blame. He may well have just come back off holiday and it might not have been his fault, and they had four rooms out for rennovation. None of this was relevant to use, we simply wanted the matter sorted. His next tactic was to try and get rid of us to another hotel, fair enough, but we were left stood there, wondering what was going to happen regarding the next three nights and how we would get to another God knows where hotel, none of this was discussed. The worse thing though was his rude manner, he constantly interrupted while we were speaking and treat us like we were a major inconvenience to him, even after I asked him to let me finish a sentence, which he agreed to do, he continued to interrupt me. He did agree to consider some sort of discount which we could discuss later.

I have met ruder people than this, but rarely do they exist in front of house positions.

Eventually we gave up and went to the attic room. Within a few minutes we got a phone call and admittedly an apology, he had managed to sort us out a double for the remainder of our stay. This is what he should have done in the first instance.

The next day we were moved to a better double room, I shall not dwell on issues with this room, it was OK and had we not had the experiences of the night before we would not have been grossly dissapointed.

The cleaning lady was very pleasant and the ladies that dealt with our breakfast were charming, and helpful.

Breakfast was OK, the first morning we had poached smoked haddock and eggs. This was a couple of skinny bits of dyed fish with nicely poached eggs. Why it was swimming in the poaching liquid I'll never know. After that I tried the bacon, this was extremely salty for both of our tastes. Sausages were OK, but nothing special. It is also worth noting that cooked breakfast was not available at the weekend until 9 O'clock, I thought we were staying in a Hotel. The buffet was good and the dining room nicely presented. One major issue for us was the almost daily appearance of the manager who swanned in, turned the music up to an inappropriate level for breakfast and then dissapeared. Go figure, is this his home or a hotel?

When we checked out, no alteration to our bill had been made, we were charged the full rate. The manager was not around to discuss this.

Upon getting home my wife rang to speak to the manager about this but again he was not around at the time. She spoke to the "senior manager", who was not able to deal with this??? My wife left a message for the manager to ring back, we have heard nothing.

All in all this is a disgrace, my wife went to considerable expense to arrange this to celebrate a very special occasion. She booked four months ahead, and nobody had the decency to contact us about downgrading our room. When the issue was bought up, the way it was handled was appalling, as such I feel totally justified in rating this Hotel as "terrible", and would not recommend it to anyone.

We went to this hotel for a family meal and up to the point of dessert, everything was really good.

My wife ordered an unusual sweet of ice cream with chillies and banana. We politely waited, on a hot day in the conservatory for approximately 20-25 minutes after order and I then spoke to the young waitress who could not have been more apologetic. Our sweet arrived and it was clear that it had been plated very quickly but forgotten in the kitchen. Saggy cheesecake and melted ice cream all round.

The ice cream chilli dish was simply awful. Melted ice cream and warm bananas, not sliced but cut in half with the hard stalk ends still on. My wife informed the same waitress who again apologised and said she'd speak to management. A short time later, a female, not in uniform and wearing no name badge stood at the end of our table in silence. We all just looked at each other wondering who she was until she broke the silence with "I hear there's a problem with the food." We were stunned at her absolute rudeness. She all but dismissed my wife's complaint saying that the dish had been a good seller historically. After a few minutes of ignorance, despite being told the rest of the meal was great, her final words were "what do you expect, it's bananas and ice cream."

We were left mildly embarrassed and angry with the response we had to what was clearly a genuine complaint.

I subsequently e-mailed the owner Julie Lyon and outlined my complaint. The response was quick and promised an investigation of the matter. I received no such explanation and a few weeks later I again e-mailed Julie Lyon. I have heard nothing further on a matter which could be easily put to bed.

I am unimpressed with the customer service and follow up by the owner in this case. I have tried to be fair by giving a reasonable time for resolution of the matter but that time has come and gone.

Business night stay over on route further south, this hotel was basically a let down, i used it this time as i like to differ my accomodation and give a bit of variety to what is quite a tedious job being away from home, your food was of sub standard and the service was slow , im putting this down to the lack of staff on duty, i wont be using this hotel again

Room Tip: pick another hotel

Visited on a lovely summer day knowing they served lunch outside. Went inside to find menu met by very rude waitress who said the menus for outside dining were in the hall however they had run out of menus so had to ask again. There was then a long queue in the bar to order drinks and food eventually my order was taken after 10minutes waiting during which time my friend was sitting on her own outside. The food was served to us but no cutlery so up we got again to find the cutlery. The prawn Marie rose sandwich was pretty tasteless and my friend left most of her cheese and ham sandwich. The food was reasonably priced and the setting is good but probably won't be back anytime soon as the service was poor and the food just ok.

Room Tip: Did not stay overnight
