The Gordon Highlanders Museum

Attraction details
Owner description: "The Finest Regiment in the World" was how Sir Winston Churchill described The Gordon Highlanders in 1900. So why not come and see why? A wonderful day out and a fantastic welcome await you at The Gordon Highlanders Museum where we are committed to preserving and sharing the legacy of this world-famous Regiment. The Museum is a Visit Scotland 5* attraction (the only 5* military museum in Scotland). It is located at St Luke's, Viewfield Road, Aberdeen, in the beautiful former home of prominent Scottish artist, Sir George Reid. However the Gordon Highlanders Museum is more than just a museum - it has a wonderful tea room, a gift shop and beautiful gardens all of which are staffed by volunteers and can offer conference and fine dining facilities as well. The Museum, in addition to displaying the permanent collection, has a full programme of events throughout the year, including a major annual exhibition (at present 'Shattered Hopes - The Gordon Highlanders in 1914'). It also provides an excellent learning and outreach programme to schools and community groups throughout the North East of Scotland, courtesy of our Education sponsors. The Gordon Highlanders Museum is an independent self-financed charity that receives no public subsidy. It is reliant upon visitors, donations and sponsorship to maintain its current range of activities. Opening Times: Early February - Late November Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 4:30pm

Caught the bus. Very easy to find. Guide (free) excellent and lovely gardens to sit out in with tasteful memorials...

Plenty of buses back to town or else you can walk it :). Will be back (to sample the tea room)

“Very interesting”

Spent a couple of hours wandering around the exhibits. A relative had been a Gordon Highlander which was the original reason for a visit, however this is definitely a place for anyone to spend a few hours. The garden is well worth a wander around too.

“Visit to my father' s regiment's museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

One of the best museums that I have visited. Neat, clean and very well organised. I especially liked the fact that one of the museum's many volunteers will accompany you around and explain about the exhibits I more detail, despite the fact that all exhibits are clearly marked.
The Officers Mess is very impressive. Allow at least a couple of hours for your visit and finish off with a snack in their comfortable and welcoming cafe.

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

I took two Canadian visitors there this morning and they were just fascinated. A really good museum with a lovely atmosphere. All the guides are volunteers and they are very knowledgeable on their subject. There are a wide variety of exhibits expertly laid out with thought and attention to detail. We took about two and a half hours to go round as they wanted to see everything. It's a small museum and you could do it quicker if you wanted.
