Lovely afternoon tea

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 Feb 2024
Had the festive afternoon tea with a group of friends. The afternoon tea was nice. Could have been more sandwiches as they were very small. The sausage roll was delicious. Scones were also very good. Would definately go again, overall a lovely afternoon.

We loved the relaxed atmosphere and style. The staff were friendly and attentive. Our room was spacious, clean and the bed was super comfortable. Breakfast was a buffet selection of traditional Scottish and continental, and it was superb. We ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent. A varied menu with something for everyone. The haddock was delicious! The bar area is a cozy space where we enjoyed relaxing next to the fire with a fine whiskey and listening to music. A great location to explore the city and countryside. Gone downhill.

Came in for our morning coffee, the sofa we sat at close to the window in the gallerie were all sticky and dirty as were the tables. Service was slow as woman was on her own serving.

When our hot drinks arrived they were accompanied by what looked like shortbread that already had bites taken from them. Then we were given teaspoons all wet and dirty the waitress said she had just washed them.

Not the service / experience I’ve had here in the past, not what you expect from a 4 star hotel and not one I want to repeat.

Room tip: Don’t go

Our Company decided to use The Chester for our office Christmas lunch. Whilst you never expect too much at these ‘bring a party to a party’ doos, you would at least expect the food to be edible. The soup, I believe, was OK, but the Turkey dinner was a disaster. The meat was tasteless and had not been seasoned, the potatoes had been regurgitated at least half a dozen times, there was an excuse of a watered down gravy, all in all it was a pretty poor offering from a hotel that is charging day light robbery prices, with a 4 star above the door. To top it off the DJ sadly looked like a porter that had been dragged from his day job unwillingly, but knew how to work a computer, he had never been near a record deck in his life or knew how to get a party started. All in all the hefty price tag per person charged for a pretty bad experience was a disgrace. No doubt the hotel will have racked it in on the bar bill, regardless of how unashamedly bad the food was. Come on The Chester bring in a decent chef that is capable of turning out a reasonable Christmas dinner. One good thing was our waitress was outstanding. Let’s hope they get it right next year.

Christmas Lunch was a poor offering. Starter and sweet were passable but Turkey Lunch was poor. More leg meat than breast, roast potatoes were soft and tough as though they had been pre cooked and heated, gravy was thin and had no taste. Sausage meat instead of stuffing which was thick cut and cold. Service was good.

I visited The Chester for a meal for the first time recently for Sunday lunch. I was very surprised about how quiet it was.

The food was a mixed bag; I had the soup of the day which was tasty but luke warm. My partner had the hummus, which he thought was nice but didn't blow him away.

For the main course we both had the Sunday roast, which was beef. When we ordered, we were told that there was no beef cheek, which was both a main course in itself, but also an accompaniment to roast. When we queried if there would be no beef cheek with the roast, the server said that it was a different cut from the full main course version and so it wouldn't affect the roast. This was clearly misinformed or a lie, as there was no beef cheek on the plate and it was clearly substituted with mash potatoes. The dish already came with roast potatoes, so it was an odd choice for me. If I was being particularly pedantic, it also meant that the value of the roast wasn't what it should be. The dish itself was ok - the Yorkshire pudding and gravy was nice, however, the beef was just one very large hunk of meat that felt almost like a steak which really wasn't to my liking. Again, the food was tepid.

Desserts were good, the creme brûlée was lovely and a generous portion. However, the sticky toffee didn't come with enough sauce, but it did taste nice.

The service was also mixed. It seemed to be the case that the younger members of staff were more knowledgeable and helpful than the senior members. They were polite and attentive. We thought it was odd that the restaurant manager or supervisor was not telling customers about the roast as an option as we had to specifically ask after seeing it served to another table.

I don't think I would rush back to this restaurant, but at the same time I wouldn't say I would never return. The service was good, the venue itself is lovely, but the food just missed the mark for me, which is the most important element!
