Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Our museum sits in a 6 acre site and visitors walk through time from 1888- 2013. During your tour you will hear how life was "within these walls" through a quality headset which incorporates the voices of ex-staff who worked within the former Victorian prison. At normal pace the tour takes about 1.5 hours, however once in you can spend as long as you want and examine the former prison in detail and at the end of the tour you can visit our newly opened "Refuge Café" named after the Harbour of Safe Refuge which the original inmates supported by breaking granite stones by hand at the nearby Stirlinghill Quarry. Something for all ages to learn from and enjoy. Open daily 10:00-18:00 with last entry being 16:30.

Brilliant visit, well organised and lay out very interesting stories. Forgot to ask who actually owns and runs the museum, can anyone help?

Dear Garry C

Delighted you enjoyed the experience so much and found the design and information provided of interest.

The former prison was saved by a large local company, but now a stand alone entity supported by our visitor numbers, which we continue to see grow not only in the UK market, but now seeing significant numbers coming internationally.

Hope to see you back again in the future as other areas start to develop

Regards Alex

Such a great time there doing the audio tour. It’s really well done and whomever was in charge of orchestrating it should give themselves a pat on the back.

Go see it!

Jumped on the bandwagon and took the kids for the first time last year, wow!! Very interesting. Love the fact that it’s not been done up and is as it was. Now been 3 times and would go again, there’s always something different, but the best part was meeting the famous Jackie Stewart. This man is a local legend and if you get the opportunity to meet him you will see why.

Dear Lynn C

Delighted to see your review and the fact you have been back multiple times to see us and intend returning again.

Please do make yourself known when you do come back as it would be nice to have a chat about your experience when you visit.

Also pleased to see you had time to speak to Jackie as this is always a highlight for visitors and as you say many reflect he is a "local legend".

Thanks on behalf of the team based at the museum.

One of the most interesting visits,we have ever made. The audio guides are exceptional. Don't go on a Monday or you'll miss meeting Jackie Stewart, a former prison officer with an amazing story to tell.

Dear rvdrive

Thanks for the review and delighted you enjoyed the experience we offer within these walls.

Many reflect on the benefits of the audio sets as you not only hear about former staffs experiences at key points, but you can also move at your own speed throughout the route, so pleased you felt they were "exceptional".

Hope to see you back again in the future as other areas start to open up.
