Stayed in Aug. 2011. After traveling around and going to all the "tourist castles", I could tell by the staircases in this on that it was the real deal. It looks like a large mansion on the outside so I really don't know how to designate a castle from a mansion but to me, it was a castle! The owner's son took me around and showed me the inside (I wish I could've seen more!) including the small chapel and then he showed me to my room which had one of those spiral staircases and a rope hanging down the middle as a railing--it was my private staircase and I loved it!! The entire home was very intreging and the gardens outside were beautiful. There was a field with two horses and Sandy the Clydesdale was very friendly. The next morning I went to the kitchen where the large fireplace was (like the tourist castles) except this one had a woodstove. I had the Arbroath smokie (a fish that is smoked a certain way and only done here in the community) and it was served filleted open with the string still attached to the tale) and it was delicious!! I would highly recommend staying if you want the real castle feel. Thanks for sharing this great piece of architecture!

I just want to wet your appetite a bit, you must go there to experience it. Miles from anywhere, so there is the first reason to have the evening meal. Secure covered cycle parking - many thanks for that. So a few thing to expect:
1. There are no TV's - you don't need one the meal is lengthy process
2. It's a castle, don't expect modern house temperatures, but there are heaters in the room and a wood burner in the dining room, that was very nice.
3. The food will be interesting, why not add a few likes and dislikes in advance to add some more excitment. Expect the unexpected !
4. The rooms are enormous, everything is clean and bright.
5. The people are really friendly
6. No cards, Cash or cheque.
7. You can walk in the gardens, very beautiful.

We recently stayed one night at Ethie Castle as part of our honeymoon. This is a very unique and fabulous location for a bed and breakfast. Its a beautifull castle which has been lovingly restored by the very friendly host and owner Kirstin. Our room was very large with lovely touches every where you looked. The breakfast room was fantastic as was the freshly cooked food. You simply will not find anywhere like this as a bed and breakfast. The castle grounds also have lovely gardens and closeby there are wonderfull beaches to walk on.

A beautiful castle making it a stay with a difference, a delightful wholesome experience well worth it. The food is a delight with lots of home grown produce, all caringly cooked and presented, not to mention the well chosen wines!! A walk round the exquisite gardens are proof of the work put into this lovely home by the very helpful owner Kirsty De Morgan.

Room Tip: Room overlooking the garden was a joy!

My wife and I stayed during our honeymoon in Scotland and enjoyed the grounds, food and the castle.
The owner was a little cold but pleasant and the dinner was well worth the money.
We had a wild game stew that was wonderful and the appetizers were great.
Breakfast was delightful and filling as were most in Scotland.
After breakfast we toured the gardens which are both beautiful and very well kept.
We were supprized at the extent of the gardens being a private castle.

Ethie Castle has been saved by Mr & Mrs de Morgan and looks splendid.
A red sandstone building dating from the 14th Century and reputed to be Scotland's second oldest permanently inhabited "castle"near Arbroath but rather hard to find.
The garden restoration is superb.
When we entered the cold hall at twilight we had a jolly interrogation from Mrs de Morgan and eventually we were shown to a twin bed room. Unfortunately when I requested that we should have the room I chose at the time of booking (a four poster double) it became clear that the owner had no intention of this due to my partner being the same sex.
Now this is the second time in my life this has occurred and never quite recovering from the first I stated that we as Civil Partners were very used to sharing a four poster bed at home and this is what we reserved and now wanted for the next three nights.
We were told by the owner she was very disappointed and we never saw her again . I think she moved out for the duration of our visit.
Now this worked very well as the housekeeper , Yvonne , was charming and a superb hostess. Her breakfasts were very pleasant , and her historical tour of the rooms unforgettable.
The castle is something of a labyrinth and a cold one too.We were not invited to use any of the sitting rooms.
Perhaps if the bedrooms were preheated rather than warmed during the stay things would have appeared more welcoming. Our bath and shower were excellent , and the bed side clock radio good.Robes and slippers were supplied , but the slippers were well used by others.
Ghost stories....well don't ask on your first night.
Dinner , with some food from the garden can be arranged at £30 pp.
We ate out but did not care for Gordon's restaurant nearby (£44pp)
Arbroath Abbey has a superb visitors center .
