My husband and I booked a room in Ethie Castle on our recent trip from the U.S. to Scotland. We chose it because of its location a few hours north of the Edinburgh airport. Our goal was to stay in castles and explore castles along the way.

Ethie turned out to be the perfect choice for us. It is a very old castle, lovingly restored by its owners. The castle is being treated as a B & B, rather than a large commercial establishment. I believe this adds to the comfort, charm, and personal attention given to all guests.

We were comfortably accommodated in a large bedroom suite. All of the rooms, including sitting rooms, breakfast rooms, and bedrooms, are very charming and unique. As the castle is very old, there are only circular stone staircases. In the breakfast room, each morning, we were greeted by a warm fire built of wood cut from the estate.

Yvonne, the very knowledgable housekeeper, not only cooked for us, and gave us very important information about the surrounding countryside, she also gave us a tour of the castle and taught us about its history. It was wonderfully informative and enjoyable.

The grounds of the castle were the best we visited, including the many historic castles that we toured. The De Morgan family has lovingly re-created a parterre/English garden that incorporates structure with free-flowing beauty within ancient stone walls.

Ethie is situated in the midst of rolling green pasture land, away from cities. For us, this was a big plus.

Ethie is a place we would happily return to stay.

When driving to Ethie, be aware that it is on the east coast near a village called Inverkeillor. The roads, though very charming, are not very well signposted. The castle, itself, is not signed. You have to follow "Ethie Barns" to get there.

Room Tip: There are only 3 or 4 rooms that are being used for B & B. Ours was a large one with a lovely b...

My wife, daughter, and I stayed at Ethie castle in April. People talk about `magical experiences' and places being `surreal' and, if that's an interest of yours, then visit Ethie. The castle is supposed to be haunted, and perhaps it is, but I didn't have any paranormal experiences there. What I had instead was a wonderful time in a beautiful, old castle with magnificent grounds and brilliant views. The castle is not far from Arbroath but, when you're there, you feel as though you're in the middle of nowhere. In the mornings, when the grounds are covered with mists, Ethie seems like a castle in the clouds. The building appears and then vanishes in the fog as you look at it. Really surreal. In the evening a silence settles over the place so completely you can feel almost lost in time. The hostess lives in the castle with her family and three dogs, who are very friendly. Those allergic to dogs should be aware of their presence, however, as the dogs do like to visit you in your room. We found the hostess to be more than accomodating as my daughter is a vegetarian and requires a special diet. Our meals were excellent and my daughter's vegetarian dishes were just as beautifully prepared as those for us meat eaters. One takes meals at a large, round, communal table on the first floor at specified times. The rooms are up on the second floor. If there was a lift, or some other means for handicapped individuals, I did not see one. The rooms in Ethie are spacious and comfortable and have bathrooms en suite. Be sure to wander the grounds and, especially, out toward the cliffs, for a spectacular view. Perhaps not best suited for those with small children as I did not see any activities provided for kids. For those who enjoy drinking and smoking: There is no smoking allowed in the castle nor on the grounds. Wine was provided with dinner but, if one wanted a nip of something later on, one would have to provide it one's self. So if you want a pint or two in the evening in your room be sure to arrive there with it already. All around, a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Every room I saw seemed to be of the same quality and the views are all lovely.

Stayed in Aug. 2011. After traveling around and going to all the "tourist castles", I could tell by the staircases in this on that it was the real deal. It looks like a large mansion on the outside so I really don't know how to designate a castle from a mansion but to me, it was a castle! The owner's son took me around and showed me the inside (I wish I could've seen more!) including the small chapel and then he showed me to my room which had one of those spiral staircases and a rope hanging down the middle as a railing--it was my private staircase and I loved it!! The entire home was very intreging and the gardens outside were beautiful. There was a field with two horses and Sandy the Clydesdale was very friendly. The next morning I went to the kitchen where the large fireplace was (like the tourist castles) except this one had a woodstove. I had the Arbroath smokie (a fish that is smoked a certain way and only done here in the community) and it was served filleted open with the string still attached to the tale) and it was delicious!! I would highly recommend staying if you want the real castle feel. Thanks for sharing this great piece of architecture!

I just want to wet your appetite a bit, you must go there to experience it. Miles from anywhere, so there is the first reason to have the evening meal. Secure covered cycle parking - many thanks for that. So a few thing to expect:
1. There are no TV's - you don't need one the meal is lengthy process
2. It's a castle, don't expect modern house temperatures, but there are heaters in the room and a wood burner in the dining room, that was very nice.
3. The food will be interesting, why not add a few likes and dislikes in advance to add some more excitment. Expect the unexpected !
4. The rooms are enormous, everything is clean and bright.
5. The people are really friendly
6. No cards, Cash or cheque.
7. You can walk in the gardens, very beautiful.

We recently stayed one night at Ethie Castle as part of our honeymoon. This is a very unique and fabulous location for a bed and breakfast. Its a beautifull castle which has been lovingly restored by the very friendly host and owner Kirstin. Our room was very large with lovely touches every where you looked. The breakfast room was fantastic as was the freshly cooked food. You simply will not find anywhere like this as a bed and breakfast. The castle grounds also have lovely gardens and closeby there are wonderfull beaches to walk on.

A beautiful castle making it a stay with a difference, a delightful wholesome experience well worth it. The food is a delight with lots of home grown produce, all caringly cooked and presented, not to mention the well chosen wines!! A walk round the exquisite gardens are proof of the work put into this lovely home by the very helpful owner Kirsty De Morgan.

Room Tip: Room overlooking the garden was a joy!
