“Quality investment starting to show”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2010

I stayed at Letham Grange a couple of years ago with some friends and the place was a bit run down due to lack of investment over the years, although we enjoyed ourselves enormously.

Now they have a future it seems because as well as two really good golf courses, the magnificent building that houses the main part of the hotel is being given a facelift without losing it's querkiness that me and my friends enjoyed so much in the past.

This is without doubt one of the most peaceful places to stay in Scotland if you are after a golfing break. There is near access to at least another 8 high quality golf course (including Carnoustie, Downfield, Monifieth etc) but the quality of the place is wonderful especially when one takes into consideration the price for the rooms.

Yes, it is, as the General Manager says "work in progress" for the next few months on a number of things, but there is real intent on getting this place approaching the top of the ladder regarding superior golf breaks in Scotland which reflects very well on the new owners and their commitment.

Seldom have I stayed in a stately home on a golf break and enjoyed the views from enormous rooms with wardrobes from The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe status, and yet felt completely at home.

I have played golf alll over the world and I can say there are only a few places that get the hairs on the back of my neck standing up when I arrive - St Andrews 18th fairway, Les Bordes in Beaugency, France, Eichenheim in Kitzbuhel, Austria, Royal Melbourne in Australia.

I rank Letham Grange in the list. It's not perfect yet - but I have a funny feeling, seeing the progress that has been made recently, that it will be.
Thoroughly recommend it.
It's peaceful.

I played the Old Course Saturday the 24th of April, spent the night and left after breakfast on the 25th. The golf course was in good shape and the greens were excellent.

The food was very good, dinner was as good as it gets with a good selection with a Scottish flare. The staff are quite young, but well supervised.

My room was HUGE with terrific views of the 1st & 18th holes of the course. Nice to drink coffee Sunday morning and watch the players tee off from the room.

Total satisfaction, I'll definitely return if the opportunity arises.

Set in a stunning location Letham Grange could be a jewel on the east coast of Scotland.

Having gone through a collection of owners, including the administrator, Letham Grange is a wonderful stone built property set in its own very splendid grounds marred by occasional sloppy service and some physical eyesores dotted around the estate, none more so than a redundant hurling rink that looks more like an oversea's abattoir than a former sporting location. The conservatory that has been bolted onto this once noble property looks as though it has seen better days too.

The hotel appears to be running on a skeleton staff, all of them young, desperately trying to do two or three things at once and often not quite succeeding. There appears no senior hotel pro who can help, encourage or when necessary, have words with the staff which means for a number of uncleared tables and less than slick service at meal times.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable but the selection of toileteries in the bathroom are meagre and were not replaced during my stay. For a group of blokes wanting to play some of the excellent courses nearby such as Carnoustie, Panmure, Forfar or Monifieth this is a sound enough base for a long weekend. It also has two 18 holes courses of its own, although the more challenging course suffers terribly from water running down from the surrounding hills making it unplayable at times during autumn, winter and early spring.

There is so much more the hotel could be doing to improve itself but cash flow is clearly a problem and it is certainly not somewhere I would take my wife to for a weekend getaway break because there are too many minor faults and a feeling that there is no one in charge.

With a lot more money and hard nosed hoteliers running it it could be a stunning retreat. Sadly it is a long way from reaching anywhere near those heights at the moment.
