The Rosely Country House Hotel

Reviewed 26 January 2014

I stayed in the Rosely in August 2013 and had no hesitation in booking it again when I ventured back to Arbroath recently. It has a wonderful old fashioned quirky charm which I really enjoy and which is so hard to find nowadays. There is very little which is hi-tech or in the least bit modern about this place, it's a little tatty round the edges but us clean and comfortable. The entrance hallway is grand with high ceilings and large ornate mirrors adorn the walls. My room was a good size with an old wooden double bed piled up with blankets and cozy quilts. Being quite tall I found the length of the bed was too short so had to sleep diagonally! (people were generally shorter in the era when those beds were made). The shower looked like it had been installed in the seventies but worked perfectly well. Tea and coffee (and a jug of fresh milk) was provided in the room along with some pretty little bone china cups. I didn't eat in the hotel but breakfast is provided and evening meals can be ordered in advance. I love this place, it's good value for money and the staff are cheery and helpful. Oh..and there is wi-fi in the rooms, it's a little erratic but worked well most of the time.

We are so happy you enjoyed your stay Shirley, thank you for the great review.
We have now started to freshen up the bedrooms and the bar which is great.
Im sorry your bed was too small for you, if you are in the area and decide to stay with us again we will be sure to give you a nice big bed.
Yes the wifi was weaker in certain parts of the hotel so we have now installed boosters which has seemed to have fixed that problem.
We hope to see you again soon.

Stopped here whilst on a business trip and so glad I did. I stay in so many dull soulless, chain hotels, they all look and feel the same....boring!
This place certainly wasn't. Like some of the previous reviewers, I certainly didn't find it modern but therein lies the charm! Did make me feel like I was about 11 and staying at my granny's for the night in her 1940,s pad but hey, loved it! Cheery staff had, clean, a good breakfast and the place is certainly "different", would recommend giving it a go!! Ask about the history of the place..fascinating!
The lady offered me an evening meal if I wished but I declined in favour of a wander through the town and that's another story?

A strange and historic Victorian 1840s gothic country house. Not restored to the point of destruction but cared for, quirky and lived in. Friendly and welcoming staff. Unpretentious and simple evening meals are offered and a good hot breakfast. Several fascinating original Victorian features including an amazing stained glass window in the hall/stairs. The squeamish will not like the extensive array of hunting trophies in the main hall. Two minor criticisms. Heating and hot water might not be as efficient as some would like. No ale in the bar, only draught or bottled later. Great value and memorable.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us, thank you for the great review.
Thank you for bringing the heating and hot water to our attention, we now have a new heating system which seems to have solved that problem and we now stock bottles of ale and hopefully have ale on draught in the near future.
We hope to see you again.

We stayed for one night and it was quite an experience! The room was very large, with an additional bed amongst the antiquated furniture. It was in need of a good dusting, but was comfortable enough once we figured out that the heating appeared to be centrally controlled with a timer. It was cold when we arrived and we couldn't get the heaters to come on. When they did later we could control them as normal! The furniture is varied, but very much in keeping with the age of the establishment. The main hall and stairway is quite drk and filled with mounted stuffed animals - fine and again in keeping with the building. We were a bit concerned about some of the broken glass, part of the stained glass section on the stairs. Fortunately we did not have any children with us as it could have been a hazard for inquisitive youngsters. The ancient cot and dolls outside our room was more than a bit spooky! On our day of arrival we spoke to an elderly lady who told us she was tasked with painting the whole fence around the gardens - she looked as though it might be too much for her. Next morning we saw her loaded up with bed linen, etc to hang out on the washing line! Breakfast was another experience - we were shown to a table that had been clearly used earlier and an upside down large bottle of tomato sauce was the most prominent item on the table! Cereal selection amounted to corn flakes, Kellogs Rice Krispies or supermarket own brand rice crispies! However, the cooked breakfast was fine and the room was actually quite nice and bright. The grounds are lovely and the building impressive. The plastic rats in the hall show a sense of humour, as does the yellow duck in the holly bush in the grounds. I assume the fake cobwebs in the bar area were left over from Hallowe'en! So much could be achieved by someone with the money to spend to bring everything up to a good standard.

Thank you for your review.
Thank you for bringing the dust to our attention, we now have a strict cleaning rota and we also have new heating system.
We have now freshened up the hall with a new carpet and paint to brighten it up which is great.
Sadly there is still a small part of broken glass on our stained glass window which is sad, we are now looking into ways to make this safer so thank you for bringing this to our attention.
The elderly lady (the owner and my gran) is now 92 and still going strong which is great and still helps with the linen, she says it keeps her young so as long as shes happy its great to see.
We now have the cereal in storage containers to keep them fresh and the ketchup is now served in a ceramic dish so i thank you for bringing this to our attention.
We are now in the process of freshening up the bedrooms which will hopefully bring the hotel up to a good standard.
We hope to see you again.

I agree with both previous reviews - friendly, clean and lots of historical pieces - a bit like a lived in museum. My problem was I was the only guest on a Saturday and when I returned in the evening there was no staff and no bar. I had a key for the front door so was on my own in a very large establishment but the views are lovely and breakfast was good - with fruit juice!

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed very good with excellent views. The single room had a good sized bed and shower...
