“Friendly hotel”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

We stayed in the Aboukir Hotel in May 2013 for one night on our way back from the Highlands. After being turned down from at least 4 B&Bs because of my wife’s guide dog, we were happy to find a place after all which accepts dogs.
It turned out to be an okay stay.

The check in was a bit strange at first, because we had to walk with our luggage through the patrons in the pub, but we were soon taken into a separate room where we discussed the details. The staff was always friendly and helpful.

We had the huge room on the first floor, which was really spacious, including the bath. The interior was okay, it was clean except for the mirror which carried a thick layer of dust. Due to being close to the ground floor, it was a bit noisy until the pub closed – after that it was quiet.

We got up very early because we had a long drive ahead of us and had the feeling that it was uncommon to have breakfast so early (although within the official hours). The pub area was still being cleaned up, deliveries being loaded into the kitchen. Still, we got our cooked breakfast and had enough choice to have a good start in the day.

Overall, we would stay in the Aboukir again, but try to get a room a bit further up.

Room Tip: On busy nights in the pub, it may be a good idea to choose a room not on the first floor.

Macaroni and cheese lunch looked and tasted as if it it came from a Kraft box - thin macaroni and watery sauce. No side salad just soft chips. Disappointed - one of the worst macaroni meals served to me in years. It was made worse by the waiter asking if the meal was OK but he walked away before I could reply. If I had to go again, I would pick the Coronation Chicken Panini which my mother had and was much better.

This was my third stay in the Aboukir Hotel and I will certainly look forward to making a return visit. The rooms are light, fresh and in really good decorative order and I love the high ceilings and locally-painted framed prints on the walls. There's plenty tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water in bedrooms; modern, spacious en-suites with powerful showers and thick towels. Attentive staff and locals alike are very welcoming and extremely friendly. The menus offer an extensive choice of delicious food with a good wine list and eating is an enjoyable experience either in the restaurant or the bar area, it's your choice. One evening during my visit to Carnoustie there was a fabulous folk session - participation and requests very welcome! The bar terrace and beautifully-tended garden are pleasant places to take advantage of fine weather (very balmy during my stay). There's a good breakfast to be had in the restaurant overlooking a kitchen garden where herbs and other fine plants grow. Finally, I love the general laid back, relaxed atmosphere of the Aboukir and feel perfectly at home and welcomed during each stay - thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel have views of the sea or the lovely garden.

A great hotel in Carnoustie. We were visting a friend in the area and having trouble finding somewhere that would take the 3 of us and our dog - golfers and clubs no trouble but nowhwere seemed pet friendly. However, the Aboukir was wonderful. Dog no problem - had a great family room on the top floor with fantastic sea views. Bar and restaurant lively and good fun - did not eat there but breakfast was good and staff all very nice and helpful. We will definitely be coming back.

We returned to our favourite place to stay in Carnoustie and had a lovely time. The Aboukir is a welcoming and warm, comfortable hotel with the best bar in town and an excellent restaurant. We had 2 rooms on the top floor, which are reached by quite a few stairs, and offer lovely sea views for good value and there is ample free parking. The rooms are spacious, very clean and notably have a comfortable temperature. You are provided with several bottles of sparkly water which is a nice touch and a generous power shower is pleasantly followed by lovely towels. We attended a very well organised event run by the hotel on the Saturday to Perth races which was fantastic! We have also enjoyed the folk nights previously and the hotel are genuinely keen for you to enjoy yourself. The dinner we had was again delicious with good service and each time we have had dinner in the atmospheric, contemporary restaurant/bistro we have really enjoyed it. One time Gary Lineker was at the next table to us! The bar is friendly and a mixed age group with a large outdoor decking area to sit in overlooking the well attended gardens and locals told us they regard it as the best bar in Carnoustie. It is not overly noisy or boisterous: just a good atmosphere and lovely furnishings. Football is popular but pleasantly it does not overpower the bar. We would definately recommend the Aboukir and we are looking forward to coming back again.

We stayed here for a weekend. The rooms are really nice- we had the large family rooms at the top of the hotel with fabulous views of the sea.
Positives.
• Good location- close to beach (10 min walk)
• Excellent views of sea
• Relaxed atmosphere - check in very easy- we took our bags up and that was it
• We were allowed to check out later on the Sunday unlike some hotels where they make you leave early even if you have a late flight
• Excellent shower
• Plenty of clean towels
• The Hotel is also a bar with a lovely local atmosphere and busy without being loud and overbearing
• Food in restaurant was really good
What could have been better?
• Breakfast- they stop serving at 9.30 which is too early on a Sunday
• No coffee to buy in main bar area
• Rooms were not cleaned one day

If you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel for a weekend then this will be fine- you will be well looked after and you are close to all that Carnoustie has to offer.
