The Monifieth Links are just down the road about 5 miles from Carnoustie. The first six holes run north along the train tracks and if the wind is from the north it plays very, very long. At the north end of the course you can look across the fence to the southern holes of the Panmure Golf Club. The two clubs have a considerable rivalry and much history and to this day they get together annually to play a tournament where you start at one clubhouse and play to the other, since the courses meet in the middle. They have a never ending debate over who has the best greens, but the fact is that both have fabulous greens. When you are visiting Carnoustie or St. Andrews, Monifieth Links would be a good stop over for a nice round of golf at a quarter the cost of the Open courses, but it is used as an open qualifier.
