“rip off for bad food, manager not even bothered!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2013

Tourist info in Campeltown recommended this place, we were going to camp on the farmsite up the road (FYI - DO go to the campsite, farmer James Barber is lovely and it's spotless, with a great view). so off we went to the Argyll Arms on Sunday night. we realised we were a captive audience, as there is nothing else in the area. but this was beyond poor! The lad who served us was really nice, he tactfully said he "hadn't tried any of the food yet" when we asked what he would recommend. being hungry after a long day of travel, I ordered the fish & chips and my 3 friends ordered the burger. Having a juicy mince steak in mind, when the meal arrived, we couldn't believe our eyes! a dry large bun, with a tiny little pattie inside, not even butter, chutney or anything. the chips was of the chunky kind. it looked worse than a poor student's bbq or sports canteen cheap deal. and this was billed at £10!! I once worked in a greasy spoon cafe and recognised what comes from the wholesaler at smart price range. the salad consisted of 2 bits of leaf, a few bits of tomato and dried up scallion chopped probably the day before. we had specifically asked for vegetables, and "extra" vegetables. these were frozen cauliflower, broccoli and carrots, cooked to mush!!!! When we asked to see the manager, as we didn't want to take it out on the waiter, she never as much as apologised. all she kept repeating was that the burger was "fresh" and she never had had any complaints. we asked where they were from, she didn't want to say but said they were not from Iceland and not frozen. We didn't have our camera with us or we would have taken pictures. my fish was also clearly of the cheap frozen battered kind, like a large fish finger. She admitted in the end they had ran out of vegetables and hence gave us frozen. She clearly thinks she can get away with cheap ingredients and meals but priced for £10 and up, you'd expect better quality. there were also a prawn curry and chicken curry on the menu, which were of the chip shop kind (we saw them on the plates of others in the place, and the waiter confirmed this). If you end up in this side of the Mull of Kintyre, either bring your own food or drive back to Campbeltown. SUCH a disappointment. Most disappointing was the attitude of the manager though. she did not give a fly...

We came here for a family snack, very very poor service. We had to ring the bell when we walked in, the girl came out and never even spoke, wearing casual clothes as if she was going to the shops. We asked her what fillings we could have with our toasties and panini's and she said she didn't know? I mean come on, it's not rocket science to know the basic fillings for a toasty. So we ordered our food (which was good) but she then comes out with the place mats and cutlery (which wasn't even clean) and slams them down in front of us for US to set the table our selves! I myself who worked in a hotel would not dream of doing this, wheres your customer service? Shocking ! I never like to complain but this is one of my first complaints on trip advisor and i hope it will be my last.

Very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The owners are very welcoming and the food is great. Have stayed there 3 times so far and would definately recommend the hotel. I found it by chance while travelling around and very glad I did. It's only a short walk to the beach and the surrounding views are amazing .The locals are some of the friendliest people I've met and it's just a really nice place to be. The only negative thing is that it's hard to get a signal on my mobile phone but that's not really that big an issue
