“A Little Bit Odd”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

My companion and I dropped in here for dinner a while back. This hotel is in a very attractive house overlooking the Loch - splendid position - and there was plenty of parking places up a steep driveway. From then on, it was a little bit odd. We were welcomed and the words were appropriate but we both felt we were being treated with a little suspicion and were on trial. We were sat down in a sitting room and handed menus but nobody asked us if we would like a pre-dinner drink so we did not get one because we were left on our own. The service in t he dining room, was efficient if not effusive. My mussels were delicious and the rack of lamb was very tasty, albeit a little on the tough side, but my companion said his beef was delicious. A pleasant, local beer and a local whisky were then ordered to drink with the meal. Almost as soon as we received our first courses, everyone else in the dining room upped and left. I don't think it was anything to do with us! Perhaps guests here just like eating early. However, the two waitresses then began laying up for breakfast so our next courses were eaten to the accompaniment of a loud clatter of plates and cutlery being laid out. We felt very unwelcome and in the way while all this was going on. I might go back for a meal but would not want to stay there.

I am glad you feel the house is attractive, but very surprised you felt you could possibly be 'on trial'? Obviously we are used to welcoming new guests every evening, so we can only think there must have been some distraction just prior to your arrival, so please don't take it personally! After offering you a seat in the lounge, to look at the menu, we always ask at that time if guests would like a drink. If the response is negative, we would not labour the point for obvious reasons. However, when your dinner order was taken, you were again asked if you needed anything else but you did not request a drink at that time either. As some guests simply do not drink, we did not think this was unusual, but we are sorry if we misunderstood. Regarding the setting up of breakfast service, we apologise if you found this a distraction. We are glad you and your companion enjoyed your meal overall, and thank you for this review.

We went for a short break and thought the staff were extremely helpful and efficient. The room was very comfortable and our dog was welcomed and felt at home which made us so much more relaxed. The relaxed atmosphere adds to the absolutely fantastic location. Beautiful views, near the centre too. The food was extremely good and we could highly recommend this hotel for the choice of seafood. Breakfast too, was varied and scrumptious.

Room Tip: If you have a dog ask for room 15. This has immediate access to a lovely patio and garden area which...

We are grateful for this lovely review, and happy that both you and your dog felt at home. This is our aim, and the relaxed atmosphere is designed to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible. Such a quiet location is perfect for drinks on the patio, overlooking the Loch, or, as you say, it is only a short way to the centre of town and the Harbour. We specialise in local seafood, and we are very pleased you enjoyed this, as well as your 'scrumptious' breakfast! We thank you for your kind recommendation and look forward to the possibility of seeing you again soon.

Stayed here for 3 nights with my mum. Lori was on hand to welcome us and was a great hostess. Beautiful setting with fantastic views across the Loch. Room was very spacious and well equipped everything you need from coffee, biscuits and even bathrobes. Food was delicious, we had evening dinner twice and found it to be great value for money. The cooked breakfast was lovely, the black pudding and haggis were the best we've ever had!! I have seen the reviews that refer to the decor, and yes maybe a luck of paint wouldn't go amiss in some areas, but the service and value for money are far more important! Definitely would recommend this hotel!!

Many thanks for this fine review. We are so pleased you enjoyed this trip that you had been planning for some time. It is good that your room with the views across the Loch was to your liking, and that you appreciated all the little extra touches in there. In the Lochside Restaurant, you tried a range of foods and seafoods from the local area, and we are pleased that you enjoyed them all – with the breakfast coming in for a special mention! This sunny weather has the garden looking a picture, so we hope to see you soon again, and thanks again for your kind words.

Have just returned from an overnight stay B&B at this hotel and was pleasantly surprised at the value for money. Myself, husband and 11 year old son stayed and couldn't be happier with the warm welcome we received. We knew we wouldn't arrive until later, so phoned ahead to reserve a table for dinner to be advised that a table had already been set up and we could eat between 6.30pm & 9pm so there was no hurry, this helped to put us at ease. On arrival we were greeted warmly, given an overview of the rooms/facilities and taken to our room. As there were 3 of us we thought it would be a squash and a squeeze but it was the opposite...more than enough room with a double and single bed in the same room...son happy that TV and free wifi available which kept him amused. The food from the A'La Carte menu was superb value for money, fresh seafood and very generous portions served with nice presentation, good wine selection and for afters a nice selection of local malts. We had a comfortable sleep and were welcomed in the morning with a lovely selection of food for breakfast.....overall we were delighted with the value and service of this hotel. Into the bargain it's situated right on the waterfront providing lovely views across the water towards the harbour and town. Will definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family traveling near or around Campbeltown.

Many thanks for this kind review. We are delighted you felt at ease with the hotel before you even arrived! We try to offer a comfortable environment for singles, couples and families alike, so we are pleased that you felt this was achieved. Thanks for the kind words about the local seafood, shellfish, meat, produce, cheese and game which is on offer here at Craigard. With such wonderful ingredients, beers and Malt whiskies on our doorstep, we try hard to buy local where possible. Our fresh fruit salad and home made granola mixture are always appreciated at breakfast, and kippers, smoked haddock and smoked salmon from the local Kintyre Smokehouse are popular choices, along with the full breakfast featuring MacSween's Haggis and Stornoway Black Pudding. We look forward to the possibility of welcoming you again, and appreciate your recommendation.

We booked Craigard very late on the day of arrival, which was no problem for the owner. The room that we stayed in was dated but had a charm that is hard to get with new, modern hotels. The room was immaculate and supplied with everything required for a comfortable stay including bottled water (still and sparkling), chocolate (nice touch) and toiletries. The highlight of the stay was breakfast: Craigard offers a tantalising menu with quality continental and cooked options. I would recommend the smoked haddock topped with poached eggs - it certainly set me up for the journey home. The owner was very happy to oblige when asked for items to be cooked a particular way. We were very happy with our short stay at Craigard. If we were to return to Campbeltown, we would definitely look into staying again.

We are delighted you were pleased with your short stay at Craigard. We offer a very varied menu for breakfast and dinner, specialising in local seafood, shellfish, meat, cheese and game. The smoked haddock you enjoyed was smoked just down the road at Archie's Kintyre Smokehouse. We also offer smoked and roast salmon, smoked mussels and cheese from the same supplier.
We are always delighted to adjust our cooking methods (or indeed menu) if someone has a particular favourite - so please just ask. Many thanks for the comments about the rooms, which also offer bathrobes, Neutrogena toiletries, cotton wool, cosmetic wipes, as well as the comprehensive tea and coffee service, and free WiFi. We hope we will see you soon again.

We enjoyed your visit very much, and were happy to accommodate you when your stay lasted longer than originally planned, due to severe weather. We are pleased you too, enjoyed your trip and are delighted you appreciated the underfloor heating. We look forward to the possibility of seeing you again.
