“Enjoyable short break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2014

My wife and I have used the "Royal Hotel" in Oban for many of our short breaks in the past year or two.
The most recent,Feb 23/27th was as always, a pleasant stay. Attentive friendly staff, good food
(plus a glass of wine at dinner) and a decent room, all the ingredients required for a relaxing break.
We shall be back...
George / Ethel Tait....

Room Tip: pay a little extra and enjoy watching the ferries coming and going from your 4th floor window..

Walk-in booking.
Friendly receptionist who let me view the room before booking.
Clean, warm and comfortable, and very centrally located, we stayed.
No car parking available, but plenty on-street parking close by.
Good breakfast ,with a large selection, was available.
I'd stay here again .

My partner and I visited Oban and stayed in the Royal Hotel for a night away. The hotel is very dated but tidy and nice enough, we only paid £70 for B&B so can't complain, but it was probably a little too old fashioned for us if I'm honest.

We went for breakfast in the morning however the choice was very poor. A lot of items on their 'menu' were missing, and what should have been there had all been finished. Every time we asked for some eggs or sausages, a little portion would appear but other people staying would lift these before we had a chance - basically there wasn't enough food for the people eating there.

All in all we had a nice night, but it was nothing fancy sadly.

Last minute choice for both me and my partner. arrived at hotel to very friendly and helpful hotel staff. The hotel is very dated and old fashioned, clean although needing updated. Woken at 8am Sunday morning with thee most god awful sound of squeeking floor boards from the room above like they were doing laps of the room for fun. You can hear EVERYTHING from every room round about you. (Not fun feeling a tad delicate) best part was free shortbread!

Well it was cheap - and to be fair, that's about the saving grace. First single rooms were dreadful - could barely get in the room with case without moving the furniture - then the view from the bed was the TV in the window and then the top of the outside waste bin.

We then upgraded to double rooms and they were not any better. I have no issue with basic rooms so long as they are clean - these weren't. The bedspread had various stains on it that were awful, even on pulling this back it had stains on the underside. Bathroom was basic with dirty grouting. This hotel is run down and needs a good updating quickly.

It is in a prime location and could be something great, however at the moment, I simply wouldn't return until it is renovated.

The absolute saviour of this trip/visit was the receptionist who didn't quibble when we asked to check out and for a refund. Her understanding was appreciated - almost to the point that she had heard this all before.

A great deal through their own website. The Sea view room was excellent.
For a Victorian building it was in very good condition and well maintained.
Reception was very good, Housekeeping excellent. The food was very good we stayed on a Dinner, B & B deal. The majority of staff on the catering side were young and a bit green and obviously learning, but once pointed in the right direction they were very helpful.
We drove up for the weekend, and fortunate to get parked all weekend, as their car park is quite small takes about 10-12 cars. But most arrive by train which is 2 minutes walk away.
Overall a very pleasant and professional hotel experience.
We will be looking to stay again in the future.

Room Tip: Note there is only 1 Lift in the hotel and hotel has 5 floors. The sea views are worth being on the 5...

The bar was empty, but the night porter very kindly sold me another drink after the bar staff had packed up.

Ideal location if you're coming in by train and need to catch the first ferry to Mull in the morning.
