Wife and I had lunch at The Royal twice while we were on our touring holiday around Scotland in May 2014.
On both occasions we had the 3 course set lunch and were delighted with not only the quality of the food but also the quantity and price, the next time we are near Oban we will definately be lunching at The Royal.
Clean, tidy, good friendly service and right in the middle of town.

Arrived with a coach tour last week. Our first impression was this is a grand old hotel. But on entering our room we were very dissapointed with the decor, it was grubby and dated, the windows could not be opened so made it very stuffy. The tv had only 3stations but the reception was terrible. It is stated free wl-fi but very misleading as it's only in the bar area and not in the rooms. On the up side the staff were very nice and helpful if needed, also the meals were plentiful and and a varied choice.

We arrived in Oban after a long and tiring drive in the rain. We were excited to get into our room and relax before we found a location for dinner. The two men at the check in desk were not very friendly and we loaded out bags into the tiniest, slowest elevator ever. Our room was very disappointing. There was a stain of questionable origins (ew) on one of the comforters. It made me think of those shows where they comb the hotel room with a block light (double ew). The decor was old, tired and dingy. We went our to dinner and returned as late as possible so that we were so tired we just crashed. We left the next morning for Mull on the Ferry and the young woman at check out was friendlier than the meant he evening before. Oban is a cute town, but this hotel is worth avoiding!

Stayed with the family for a night(thankfully). The hotel is well located, but I would rate it 2-stars. Front desk employee was rushed and not inclined to help much, rooms were stuffy ( asked for a fan but none available), the floor creaked in multiple places...the list goes on. The Scottish breakfast was fine - but many of the chairs had cigarette burn holes(I think).

The area surrounding the hotel did not seem safe to venture out with family in the evening. There are a few bars around the area with some inebriated customers out having a noisy time.

I would not recommend this hotel if you're traveling on a family vacation. Motel 6's in the US are better, if you're familiar with those.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere.

This hotel is super easy to get to and is convenient to everywhere, but we are paying 100 pound/night for a tiny, dirty room with 2 twin beds. The room is tucked into a corner of the hallway with beds that are so old the mattress frame can be clearly felt when sitting on the bed. There is mold on the ceiling of our room. The tv is very small and ancient (pre flat screen era). I would not want to walk on the room floor without my shoes on. Very disappointed in our room for the price. Will definitely not stay here again and cannot recommend it.

We stayed in this hotel twice, though after the first visit I should have cancelled the second.
Very sadly this seems to be the accepted norm for Oban - the hub for ferry transfers to the wonderful islands on the inner and outer Hebrides.
Well positioned in the centre of the town with by and large friendly and helpful staff the decor is "tired" at best and really shabby at worst.
How the wonderful natural produce of Scotland can be murdered in the kitchen is just not acceptable. Lamb that had clearly been sliced thinly some time before and then re-heated to be served up as a desiccated disgusting plate with no apology when this was pointed out just makes me angry as to how lazy my compatriots can be and amazed that an International clientele accept this without demur.
This is just not good enough and this kind of complacency should be a matter of great concern to the local tourist board

Room Tip: Try somewhere else, though this poor hotel may be the norm for Oban.

Arrived after 2300 hours from a late ferry from Barra so a 5 minute walk only was welcome. My expectancies were not high but for one night only it was fine. Even at 11.00 pm the single room was very hot but was of an adequate size and everything worked. Breakfast was very good and the staff welcoming and helpful. I would stay again for the odd night but for a longer stay in Oban I would look for better. Wifi available in the hotel but not in the room
Top tip - brand new Wetherspoons just around the corner open til Midnight and food til 2200 hours. A nice pub.
