Having stayed at the Royal countless times and having stayed in numerous other hotels in Oban I can recommend the Royal over the rest . Reasonably priced , spotless and always warm rooms and handy for the full range of shops and restaurants . The staff are always friendly and nothing is too much trouble . Infact at the height of Oban MOD festival the reception staff took it upon themselves to ring roiund to find accommodation for us as the Royal was fully-booked . Breakfast is generous and always properly cooked - not always the case elsewhere .I can't recommend this hotel highly enough .

having stayed in the royal before i was expecting an average stay. what a surprise when we had a fabulous holiday. i was staying with my sister and disabled mother. everyone made us feel very welcome. we had booked for a very very reasonable rate and we were expecting the food to be quite basic. the food was of a very high standard and breakfasts were amazing but by far the biggest asset this hotel has is the staff. in particular Malcolm in the restaurant was a gem. he was very efficient without being cold. he looked after us very well. we will be looking forward to another stay there very soon/

My Wife and I were in need of a break having not taken one since last Autumn.

Oban is a favourite destination of ours as we look forward to doing nothing, other than walking, sleeping, eating, drinking and just relaxing.
The Royal provides the perfect venue for this whilst not breaking the bank.
We have just spent 4nights DBB at The Royal and can honestly say it was probably the best break we've had.
The Hotel was full with what I would describe as the 'older generation' but it added to the atmosphere as everyone was enjoying themselves.

Breakfast was truely amazing with a wide selction to choose from fresh fruit to porridge, cerieals to eggs&bacon. We generally ate that much we didn't need to eat again until dinner !!
Dinner was good honest british fair, with 3/4 selections for each of the courses and different on each day. Again very enjoyable and washed down with reasonably priced house wine.

The Hotel had clearly had some recent refurbishment and was fresh and clean whilst not loosing any of its character.

All the staff we met were always polite and friendly and happy to have a chat about anything. (Beware of Teddy, his sense of humour can be some what entertaining!!)

The Hotels location is just perfect allowing you to explore the town at ease whilst conveniently located for Trains,Buses and boats.

Whilst there are some negative comments about this Hotel, I believe if you go with an open mind and enjoy this older style of Hotel you cannot go wrong.

We will definately be back again and again and again...... Well Done The Royal

There is little positive to say about this hotel other than it's location, which is centre of town, close to the pier, shops etc.
The staff are less than pleasant, there is poor signage so punters were walking around looking for the dining room. I stayed in room 2003;The chair is badly stained, as is the carpet and wallpaper, , the rear of the toilet door is filthy. The shower control is bust, as is the cold water bath tap. The curtains are two different lengths and two different tartans! The window is filthy and the draught makes for a cold half-sleep. Certainly not worth the rack rate of £100 per night, not even worth the lastminute rate I got. AVOID!

Very good breakfeast and restaurant, but the room was a little strange. The ground was inclinated! The windows were a little dirty. They have a private parking and a very kind staff. I recommend!

Stayed for 1 night in the Royal Hotel. Read other reviews and decided for 1 night i would give it a go. Yes the hotel does need some upgrading and the rooms were not as clean as they could be but you could not ask for a better location, right in the centre. Perfect for walking round the town. The staff could not have been nicer. The breakfast was lovely. All for £35 per person. You get what you pay for but to be honest i believe we got more as the reviews i read were very damming. If you are on a budget and dont have expectations more than you are paying then you really cant go wrong for 1 or 2 nights. We went to the Isle of Kerrara for dinner. Boat is free and goes from the peir near the EE ESK restaraunt. Food excellent and fantastic views over the Oban Bay. give it a try.

just spent 5 days at the royal travelled with gb travel birkenhead, well organized, the driver louise was excellent.
the hotel it self was very good just 5 minites from the harbour and all the amminities
when we arrived at the hotel the manager john got on the bus and told us all about the hotel, while this was going on all the cases where taken to the reception and then up to our rooms which was very handy no fighting for keys or luggage
the rooms are small but adaquite, the bathroom is ok but it is bath come shower so anyone with walking difficulties would find it difficult having a shower there is only 1 lift so can be quite busy on times, the food is excellant running buffet breakfast got 2 try the haggis the evening meal is 3 coures again no complaints 5 star. bar service was top notch excellant service all round from room cleaners(rooms cleaned every day and towels changed) to reception
we arrived 23rd november just after storms in the nothwest so we had heavy winds and rain all week so i can not tell what oban was like, just stayed in hotel at night and on tours in the day
But iWOULD deffinetly recommend this hotel to anyone ,i hope this helps
