“Wide Mouthed Frog,Viewing its Watery Habitat”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

Called here for a meal. If you are coming from Oban towards Fort William, on the A85, The Wide Mouthed Frog is before Dunbeig. There is a view over the marina, yachts coming and going, you can see Dunstaffnage Castle across Ardmucknish bay. The food for us was really good, and service was excellent.

“Good food but bad management left a sour taste”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

No problems with the food, nicely cooked, lots of flavour. The mussels starter was far better than the one we had at Craobh Marina, the Stornoway black pudding starter a delight of rich flavours. The four of us, all men, had no complaints over the food. But we saw that the one woman serving the restaurant and bar food was working really, really hard on her own. Her support had called off. She was taking food and drink orders and delivering both while the man behind bar stood talking most of the time to a couple with a baby whom we took to be of his family. He didn't lift a finger to help the waitress. She even had to collect and serve the drinks as well as the bills yet she still smiled when she served us about one and a half hours late. We didn't like that a couple who ordered long after us finished their meal before we got our starters but what left a really sour taste was the man behind the bar, with only two or three customers, doing absolutely nothing to support the waitress serving a full restaurant, apart from two covers, and bar food, and trying to hold the whole thing together. Go and eat at Poppies, the garden centre next door, a real gem so expect to queue at lunch time. They are not open in the evening. Excellent food, and they really do care for their customers.

“Outrageously rude manageress and mediocre food.”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

I visited this restaurant on the 17th and again on the 30th May 2014. My first meal was salad of smoked salmon and prawns which were drowned in an unpleasant seafood sauce. It was edible but nothing special or worth the price. The position was attractive, but untidy and grubby. On my second visit, on the 30th, there had been a serious car accident nearby and the road was closed. This meant that the place was exceptionally busy. Unfortunately the lady 'boss' was under so much stress that she 'lost the plot' First came the rant at the poor bar staff, and then came the abuse towards a poor middle aged lady who dared to say that she was being unfair. Then the 'Boss' shouted that everyone was to leave. The 'boss' disappeared behind the counter and the embarrassed staff continued. The bills and receipts were all lost, with one party paying twice for the same bill. We had to inform the staff what we had consumed in order to pay . My second meal was haddock and chips, which again was nothing special. It was as entertaining as Fawlty Towers!

“A great location with variable service”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

This is an outstanding location overlooking Dunstaffnage bay and marina. Sit outside and enjoy the action and view across to Mull.
There is an upstairs bar with tables and downstairs restaurant for more formal dining.
The Avalanche bitter is excellent.
Food has increased in price since last year and is now quite pricy. You can do better in Oban.
Service was variable and good when the staff were not distracted by other off duty staff who came in to chat. We arrived for lunch at 2.00pm and despite being regular customers were turned away on one occasion.
