Glenview Guest House
Ranked #47 of 94 Oban B&B and Inns
Reviewed 27 August 2014

We booked this accommodation at short notice and in order to rest before catching a very early ferry. The location of the house is convenient to reach Oban centre both by foot and by car. The location is quiet in terms of traffic.
We were welcomed by the lady of the house who showed us to our room and very helpfully offered to get up early and make us breakfast.
The decor of the house is very much in need of a freshen up but the room and bathroom were clean. Our room had twin beds on either side of a narrow room, which had very soft and 'wobbly' mattresses. Not a comfortable sleep. The room has a wash hand basin, a TV and coffee making facilities. There was a password for wifi in the room but I did not manage to connect.
Our room was right next to the shared toilet/shower for the corridor, which of course was disruptive. However, the worst was the noise disruption from the room above us. There seems to be no noise insulation so you are very much at the mercy of your fellow travellers. In our case they were very inconsiderate and we were awake for a long time.
In the end, we just had a cup of tea in our room and left early for the ferry, therefore we cannot comment on the quality of the breakfast.
This one-night stay served a purpose but we will not be back.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor room to reduce noise disruption.

We stayed in a twin room in the guesthouse which was situated down the corridor from the toilet, which is shared and smelt like a public loo (Not kidding).
We decided on the first night we would have to find somewhere else to stay or buy strong bleach to clean the toilet and try to fight off the horrendous smell that would linger in the corridor outside our room. We decided on the latter and did manage to get rid of the skid marks on the toilet and use bleach to cover the true stench. This did make our second night bearable however, lack of loo roll was another problem we faced.

The wardrobe in the room was very dusty and we didn't feel comfortable putting clothes in without giving it a clean. The carpet also seemed to be unhoovered and dirty so we decided to stay in socks at all times. You couldn't help but feel dirty inside the house.

The walls are very thin and we could hear people in other rooms complaining also.

The front door had a raised step which we tripped over a few times, the fact that the stairs led straight on the the main road did not make this safe at all!

The owner does seem kind and makes you feel welcome. Breakfasts were filling and there was a good variety. We were able to chose anytime to have breakfast which was nice however, one morning the mushrooms were still white and undercooked.

We had a very pleasant stay in Glenview, granted we were on motorcycles, we found the room a bit small for our gear, but more our problem than the B&B's. It's a 5-7 min walk into Oban, and 2-3 minutes from supermarkets. The small touches here made the difference for us. For example, we weren't compelled to be up at any particular time for breakfast, which was a pleasant break from our 8am starts. Breakfast was cooked fresh (unlike some places where breakfast is just kept warm) and was super tasty. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate were available in the bedroom and the owner was a lovely lovely lady. Also, the en suite bathroom (which was immaculate) was kitted out with very good toiletry products. Small things made it very pleasant and would recommend it as a place to stay in Oban.

Room Tip: If you have large luggage or a lot of bags, just request a more spacious room when you make your boo...

Off road parking and good location. We had two rooms - a twin and a double. The double smelt quite musty but both rooms were clean. We didn't see much of the hospitality from the owners that others have described which is a shame as there was a lot of communication before when booking, but I suppose for the price it was fairly reasonable. Personally I feel this place needs a little modernisation in regards to decoration. Breakfast was again reasonable but not the best I've had in other BnBs whilst on a tour of Scotland.

This is a traditionally styled B&B with older decor and furnishings. The friendly reception and willingness to offer me an early breakfast tipped my score up to very good (4/5) a lower score would be unfair.

I had a double room with a small en-suite shower and toilet. The decor and room furnishings are not modern but were clean and comfortable. I wasn't sure how comfortable the bed was going to be based on first impressions but had a good sleep in it. There was a sink in the room and a tea tray was provided with sachets of coffee and tea bags. There was a small TV with freeview as well.

The fan in the toilet was noisy so I tried to have it on as little as possible to avoid disturbing the room next door. You will hear other guests on the stairs and moving around as well as their doors opening and closing. I can ignore this type of noise so did not find it a problem.

It was a warm night when I stayed and the window was open all night which was fine, the road noise was not too noticeable. I did use insect repellant before going to sleep to make sure that any midgies who sneaked in would leave me alone.

Breakfast was served early for me in the dining room which is on the front of the building in a nice light room. There is parking to the rear which was useful since the entrance is directly on the main road, without a pavement.

There was free wi-fi available.

We stayed here for one night and it was great. The rooms are small but are spotless with all the amenities including ensuite toilet/shower room, free wifi, free parking, tea, coffee and biscuits in room and a full cooked breakfast in the morning. The owner is very friendly and helpful.

We stayed for one night before catching an early ferry. Our room was clean and spacious, perfect for what we required.
The hosts were very friendly and accommodating, we checked in early and were also provided with an early breakfast which was no trouble and very much appreciated by us.
Only slight niggle was noisy guests being inconsiderate to others late at night/early morning but this isn't the owners fault.
All in all a very good stay, please do not be put off by other reviewers.
