Just returned from a 3 night New year break and can't fault this Hotel. It was the cheapest of all offering New Year breaks in Oban so we booked with some trepidation but we were delighted with what we were offered. We had a spacious room with a seating area with couch and 2 easy chairs. Great bathroom with a powerful shower. All staff were pleasant and very attentive, without being over-friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Good choice at breakfast, with smoked salmon on offer on New Year's Day. Evening meals also of good quality and lunch menu available in the hotel's cafe area and the adjoining bar. Don't agree with previous reviewers who said the public rooms were poor. The decor and standard of cleanliness was fine. The weather was dreadful, rained every day so we spent the afternoons in our room - no complaints about the heating. There was entertainment each evening which made for a thoroughly enjoyable break.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a sea-view room, the views are wonderful

We have stayed in the Columba every year for a long weekend in the summer and the first weekend after the new year. When we first started going to this hotel 4 years ago, the breakfast was superb, with local food on the menu (butchers square slice, tattie scones and mushrooms). The breakfasts leave much to desire since SGE hotels have taken over with none of the above on the menu (we are not fussy eaters), with the food cooked and left on hot plates which dried it out. The January sale is no longer being promoted by the new owners (last January we had a lovely sea view for two nights for £37.50 for the room B&B, this year the price has doubled). We visited in September for my birthday and are going to Oban on the 7th January for 2 nights for my partners birthday - we have booked into the Oban Bay Hotel as it is more or less the same price as the Columba for the two nights, but is a far superior Hotel. Come on SGE try a bit harder and we will be back.

On this rainy, windy and foggy november afternoon we arrived the very charming town of Oban. This hotel is situated right in the middle of the city centre and just å few minutes walk from the Oban destillery. The room was spacious but veeery cold... even after hours with the heater on. Not a big surprise since the windows are single pane only - i mean single glass in 2011?? And then the bathroom - carpeted floor - hellooo? Disgusting... Could do with a total makeover! Staff was very friendly, food ok and price not too steep...

Room Tip: Avoid the oldest rooms and get one facing the see

I am currently staying at the hotel on an online deal and am pleased with this hotel.

Good points: nice room in terms of decor, view nice, staff friendly, good breakfast (good range of food), good location, strong shower.

Less good: bed very uncomfortable (dips and double is 2 singles pushed together), food in restaurant bad (salty, very basic), communal areas have outdated decor.

We called in here for lunch last week during a weekend in Oban.
I have to say that going into the toilets afterwards nearly made me bring my meal back up. :(
There is absolutely no need to have toilets in this state, in what seems to be a popular hotel.
There was unmentionable all down the side of the toilet, went into another and it was worse ! The third I HAD to use , I'd no option but had to "hover" over the top of toilet seat. A lick of paint and some disinfectant doesn't cost much these days.
Food......... not great to be honest, we ate it but I'd not tell friends to eat here I'm afraid. Such a shame as it lets Oban down.

Stayed here in October as I had visited it as a child and was intrigued to know how it had aged. With a great view, and a very good last-minute booking price, it suited me perfectly. Probably a good example of an old-fashioned big seaside hotel, showing its age in places - especially in my bathroom - but still a pleasant atmosphere - except for the bar which was not to my taste at all. Breakfast was everything it needed to be.
