We had booked for three nights and ended up booking in for a fourth. The room was warm, clean and very comfortable. The lift is a bit slow but if you are fit the stairs are not too much of a problem. The hotel does need a bit of tlc but all in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The breakfast made by Alexander( when he is not serving in the bar) is excellent with plenty of choice for all. We could tell the days someone else was on breakfast duty. He was a delight to deal with and the staff on the whole were friendly and efficient.

Love staying at the columba hotel, bean here several times over the last few years, its very central for walking about oban, you can park your car for the weekend and walk everywhere. The hotel is looking better than ever with new carpeting and lots of decorating been done, however the best things about the hotel are the great friendly and efficient staff and the breakfast which i think is the best in oban, next time i come to oban its the columba i will stay at.

Room Tip: ask for a view of the bay

This is a nice hotel sitting just a few yards from Oban's North Pier. The location is excellent. The breakfast is very good and the service is faultless. The rooms are a little dated but ours was comfortable and compact. I would certainly stay there again as it was pleasant.

However, there are some issues to be aware of. First, the hotel only has 8 car parking spaces and this is a big problem. We drove around the town for 20 minutes looking for somewhere to park. There is a fee paying car park next to the hotel but this was full. Eventually we got in to it but charges start early on Saturday morning. Secondly, there is a lift in the hotel but it takes forever. We gave up waiting and used the stairs. This could be an issue for some. Finally, the TV, in our room, was limited to one channel - BBC 1. Reception didn't seem interested.
Not a bad place to stay and the sea views will be hard to beat - anywhere in the world.

This hotel has many pros and some cons too, but the cons prove to be very high impact items to me, hence the 2 rating.

Pros:
Really friendly & welcoming staff
Great central location
Great room views of the bay
Very reasonable price
Decent continental breakfast
On site bar & restaurant
Has a lift (though very old and rickety so it's almost a con but most hotels don't have a lift so I'm still calling it a pro)

Cons:
Unclean room (just old & dingy room but the bathroom was disgusting!) *Photo attached
Only 8 parking spaces for hotel guests the rest is a pay & display ticket lot (though located right behind the hotel)
The hotel has a strange smell
It was very cold in our room, which is saying something because I'm always warm. Anyone else might have extremely uncomfortable.

It's fairly evident that this hotel has been neglected for a number of years. Stayed here at the end of October in a double room which was small for two people and wasn't helped by having too much furniture. The bed was extremely comfortable though and the room had a sea view, but unfortunately the window wouldn't shut so bring your earplugs if you want to sleep. The en-suite shower-room had an unusable shower which was quite obviously broken. Assuming it had been cleaned, it's difficult to see how this was not noticed as the two parts had a huge gap between them! Staff had said there had been problems with this shower recently. It's a shame that it wasn't repaired before letting the room out. We were charged £80 per night - we had 2 nights booked. As we didn't try to use the shower until the morning after our arrival we were unaware that we had paid £160 for an ensuite room with a non functioning shower. As we were attending a large function we were determined to make use of a shower and luckily staff made a shower in a nearby vacant room available for us. However we weren't so lucky on the morning of departure and had to do without. The buffet breakfast was of a very poor standard with very basic provision, wholesaler quality - given the great products that are available in Scotland this was particularly disappointing.

The staff though are a real asset in this hotel and are let down by owner/manager's haphazard approach to customer service. This is not the best Oban has to offer, go somewhere else - anywhere, just not here.

Thanks for your review

For us it’s very important that our customers feel satisfied with what we provide. We get it right more often than wrong but it is crystal clear that with your visit we have failed to deliver. That is unacceptable to SGE Hotels and you have our apologies for that.

Once again, I would like to offer my sincere apologies and thank you for your feedback

Yours sincerely
