“Good Fish Restaurant but watch out for Rule that must be obeyed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2014

This is a good fish restaurant ion the Waterfront in Oban with fresh fish and seafood served in an unpretentious way.

After our ferry to Lismore having to turn back half way across the Loch, we had 2 or 3 hours to kick around. We chose to drop in to this restaurant on the first floor at 3pm and had the choice of a window seat overlooking the water.

Our food was interesting. My oysters where fresh, delicious and far better and cheaper than those we had had in the Witchery in Edinburgh the night before. My wife had battered fish and found it very good if far too big. Half the quantity would have been fine but others may enjoy the quantity. Her chips were also good. My smoke trout was nice but I really didn't feel the fried egg and black pudding on top added to its flavour. It was rather crude and unnecessary as the trout was nice as it was.

The big no no for us was the fact that we asked for a bottle of white wine and asked if it had a skew cap so we could take the unfinished wine with us. We didn't want to over drink as we had a tricky drive on and off the ferry and a short drive to our cottage. The waitress took the cap away after pouring the wine into our glasses and when we asked for it back as we wanted to take the bottle with us, she said we couldn't because it was against the LAW. She was insistent. Perhaps she could have offered to fill our two glass and charge us for two glasses instead of charging for the whole bottle. She didn't and the LAW is the LAW (even though she was encouraging us to drink over the limit for driving). We have taken wine away from restaurants on numerous other occasions with no objections. Are they all breaking the LAW?

Unacceptable behaviour rewarded with no service tip which we only rarely do when we meet such poor service. Perhaps she enjoyed the over half full bottle of wine which we were forced to leave behind. For the whole week we spent on Lismore we met people who were so friendly and helpful so she is very much the exception. Try the Pierhouse in nearby Port Appin. Sublime.

The Waterfront Fishhouse was memorable for the wrong reasons.

“Food, location & service make this a gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2014

Upon arriving on a torrentially rainy day in the town of Oban, I went straight to this restaurant and I opened my meal with a 14 year old Oban scotch. I then ate oysters and mussels in their garlic sauce. I washed it down with a glass of sauvignon blanc. The seafood was exceptionally fresh and delicious. The service was very good although there were only two waiters to handle the lunch time rush. While they were bustling, they probably could have used an extra waiter. The ambience was clean and modern.

Get a table by the window and you can enjoy the views of the little harbor and town.

I recommend this restaurant.

“Where to find gluten free food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

The Waterfront Restaurant provides a gluten free menu on request. It includes fish and chips and sausages. Goth of these dishes are very difficult to get usually. They also have a gluten free brownie for dessert.

Thank you reviewing The Waterfront Fishouse Restaurant. We have a wide range of gluten free options and are pleased that you enjoyed our menu. The fish and chips fried in our special gluten free crumb gets lots of great compliments from our customers and our gluten free warm chocolate brownie really is a treat, served with dairy ice cream and toffee sauce. We hope next time you are in Oban you return and try our other dishes we have available on our gluten free menu.

“The Waterfront Fishouse, Oban”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014

We ate here on the 31st May 2014 to celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary and my wife's 70th birthday, The food and service were first class, their early evening special from noon until 7pm is the best value for money we have ever had. I would advise anyone visiting Oban to try this restaurant if only to try their Fishouse Stramash for a main course, we also had starters, main course, Sweets plus a bottle of wine for £46, what a steal. If you are booking ask for a window table and hope for the best, the view is to die for.

First of all Happy Anniversary to you both and hope your wife had a lovely birthday! Thank you for taking the time to write a review on our restaurant. I'm very pleased you thought our service and food were first class. As our a la carte menu is very popular many of our customers enjoy our lunch and early evening menu at £11.99 for 2 courses. We also have an "add a desert" deal with our lunch and early for just £3. The Fishouse Stramash is a popular dish from our lunch and early evening menu, next time you should try our pulled pork burger served on a gourmet sour brioche bun with cabbage slaw and apple sauce served with sweet potato fries. This is another very popular dish. Our panoramic windows make the views from our restaurant spectacular and is admired greatly. Although we cant guarantee any of our bookings a table at the window if you ask we try our best to make that possible.
