This is a good fish restaurant ion the Waterfront in Oban with fresh fish and seafood served in an unpretentious way.
After our ferry to Lismore having to turn back half way across the Loch, we had 2 or 3 hours to kick around. We chose to drop in to this restaurant on the first floor at 3pm and had the choice of a window seat overlooking the water.
Our food was interesting. My oysters where fresh, delicious and far better and cheaper than those we had had in the Witchery in Edinburgh the night before. My wife had battered fish and found it very good if far too big. Half the quantity would have been fine but others may enjoy the quantity. Her chips were also good. My smoke trout was nice but I really didn't feel the fried egg and black pudding on top added to its flavour. It was rather crude and unnecessary as the trout was nice as it was.
The big no no for us was the fact that we asked for a bottle of white wine and asked if it had a skew cap so we could take the unfinished wine with us. We didn't want to over drink as we had a tricky drive on and off the ferry and a short drive to our cottage. The waitress took the cap away after pouring the wine into our glasses and when we asked for it back as we wanted to take the bottle with us, she said we couldn't because it was against the LAW. She was insistent. Perhaps she could have offered to fill our two glass and charge us for two glasses instead of charging for the whole bottle. She didn't and the LAW is the LAW (even though she was encouraging us to drink over the limit for driving). We have taken wine away from restaurants on numerous other occasions with no objections. Are they all breaking the LAW?
Unacceptable behaviour rewarded with no service tip which we only rarely do when we meet such poor service. Perhaps she enjoyed the over half full bottle of wine which we were forced to leave behind. For the whole week we spent on Lismore we met people who were so friendly and helpful so she is very much the exception. Try the Pierhouse in nearby Port Appin. Sublime.
The Waterfront Fishhouse was memorable for the wrong reasons.
