“A gem in the enchanting village of Melrose”
Reviewed 1 December 2011

After a long and challenging escape driving out of Edinburgh, we headed down the A86 to the beautiful village of Melrose. Situated in the stunningly beautiful Borders region of Scotland, this small affluent village captured our hearts! There's really just one small main street and The Townhouse Hotel is directly across the street from another family owned hotel named Burts. The Townhouse was recommended to us by a local relative as being a better value, so we booked a room there. It was lovely, clean and well appointed. AND the restaurant knocked our socks off at dinner! Who knew that we would encounter such finely prepared and interesting food in Scotland!? Richard had the Roasted lamb rump with rosemary potatoes, and a red wine reduction. I had the Scottish salmon with a green pea risotto and pea shoots salad. The grand finale was a trio of homemade ice creams from Over Langshaw Farm, just a few miles down the road. Kudos to executive chef Trevor Williams and the very capable Barry Owen, who made our dinner that evening!

We spent a two night break here recently and were impressed with the room, the service and the food. We ate in the Brasserie both nights and had two lovely meals, plenty of choice and all beautifully cooked. Breakfast delicious too.
Everything was spotlessly clean. We would certainly recommend this hotel and will be back in the Spring/Summer.

This was our second trip to the Borders - but the first at The Townhouse. We were warmly greeted by lovely staff at reception and ate in the Brasserie for lunch. The young waitress was charming and helpful and the food great without being exceptional. Our room was overlooking Market Square, was well presented though a littte warm!
We ate one night at local Italian and the other at sister hotel Burts.
The area is beautiful and quiet (unlike the Lakes) and we thoroughly enjoyed our trek up the Eildon Hills.
Overall a smashing little hotel and in our view, the staff being a great asset to the owners (Henderson family).

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the Hotel overlook the pretty Market Square

Lovely hotel very nicely restored and with a trendy edge which doesn't take away from the building at all. The town is also lovely. We ate dinner the night we stayed and the food and service was excellent. The breakfast was fine but when we asked if we might have a vegetarian version of the cooked breakfast i.e just take off the meat....they literally did just that. It would have been nice to have been given say an extra egg etc. Especially as the woman on the next table who WAS having the full cooked breakfast was asked just after us whether she wanted more than one egg!! A minor quibble and I would stay here again.

We booked this hotel for a two night break. The room (upgraded on arrival to superior) was excellent; I have paid a lot more for smaller suites! We ate in the Brasserie. We have already recommended this hotel to friends and look forward to a return visit ourselves.

This hotel is an absolute gem; Melrose is in the heart of the most undervalued and underappreciated part of Scotland. This hotel is as welcoming, comfortable and as good as any you will find in it's class.

Staff were thoroughly charming - special mention to the lovely young ladies in the bar/restaurant, and to the helpful and informative management who positively added to our stay.

Food is great - room was delightful. A1 overall.
