Popped up to Melrose for one night(stayed before) and not disappointed.Room spotless with everything one expects and friendly reception. One of the owners always on hand and extremely affable. A we had eaten dinner there before decided to eat in bar instead(the dinner is real gourmet fare). Not cheap but you get what you pay for! The food was perfection(even the bowl of olives capers sun-dried tomatoes etc)This place deserves it's reputation. Afterwards the owner carried our wine out to the lovely garden where we finished the night. Breakfast superb too!

We had a lovely peaceful break here in this hotel. The service and food was excellent. How nice the staff were we came a long way and wanted three days of bliss and peace and we got it. What a lovely town it is in with lovely little shops and the people are so friendly. The only small blip was with the local telford coach who didn't pick our group up but we met up with more nice people in another company who helped us out. How nice the Scottish people are. Thank-you.

We spent a night at Burts Hotel on the way down to Weardale from the highlands and quite enjoyed the stay. The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the room large and comfortable. Dinner in the bar was quite good with good service. Melrose itself was quite a lovely spot.

Burts Hotel in Melrose is a bit of a puzzle, the food is fantastic, out of this world, some of the staff have obviously not been trained on this world!

Single rooms were very small and cramped and my window looked out on a peaked roof and only actually showed 6 inches of sky at the top.

Bar was closed till 5.00pm (5 of us arrived at 4.00pm) and the receptionist wasn't keen for us to sit and discuss business with tea and coffee, very strange.

The food in the bar was marvellous, inventive and beautifully cooked and presented, pity the serving staff had missed out on the training, ie table not cleared of previous dishes, starters arrived and we hadn't any cutlery.

Breakfast again was good food but the staff were slow and forgetful.

And the final irony was that five business people were trying to check out at 7.45am and the reception didn't open until 8.00 am, first time any of us had ever encountered a hotel where reception wasn't open at 7.45am!!!

And lastly but most importantly, the customer is the supposed to be the important thing in a hotel, it was disconcerting to be treated as an inconvienience!!! Smiling is obviously not compulsory, but it helps.

We recently spent three enjoyable days @ Burts taking advantage of their very attractive Winter Break Sale( £59.00 per person for Dinner Bed and Breakfast) The Food is outstanding and the staff are friendly and fun. They are in the midst of refurbishing some public areas but this did not detract from a very pleasurable stay in Melrose. Try the New Chocolate Shop on the High Street........wow!!

Extremely popular hotel for eating, but we stayed for two nights and found the corridors and residents lounge very shabby and needed to be refurbished very badly. Our bathroom comprised a tiny shower cabinet and loo with not space to turn and the wash basin, in the room, was cracked in two places. I wished I hadn't looked at the pillows or would have brought my own. Some of the staff were pleasant enough but others tended to give the impression that the sooner they got the food served, the better! Go for a meal, but don't stay over.
