Owner description: Probably the most famous ruin in Scotland, the abbey was founded by David I in 1136 for the Cistercian Order, and it was largely destroyed by Richard II's English army in 1385. The surviving remains of the church are of the early 15th century, and are of an elegance unsurpassed in Scotland. Objects found during excavation are displayed in the Commendator's House. The exterior of this magnificent ruin is decorated by unusual sculptures, including hobgoblins, cooks with ladles and a bagpipe playing pig. The abbey is also thought to be the burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart, marked with a commemorative carved stone plaque within the grounds.

Spent a couple of hours wandering around this beautiful abbey and museum. We had a glorious day which added to our enjoyment. If you can, make sure you climb the spiral staircase up to roof level to get the most stunning views of the surroundings, worth it! We had the audio tour which made sure we got the most out of our visit.

Visited Melrose Abbey while down in Melrose. First time visiting Melrose Abbey and i'm sure i'll be back to visit again in the future. a great little gem of a place with a lot of history and impressive ruins. i only wish i more time to discover the other section across the road where the Abbey's museum was located.

Melrose Abbey is Scotland's most famous Abbey and is located in the beautiful town of Melrose. This twelfth century Abbey is majestic in it's ruins and is the home of Robert The Bruce's Heart- the true Braveheart. Climb the narrow stairs to the top of the Abbey for some amazing views.
