Stayed here for 4 nights when fishing in October. Everything you could want and well situated, quiet and private. Will go back again
Melrose is delightful. Lovely shops, cafes and places to visit. The house is perfect. It's really homely yet smart and up to the minute with wet room, excellent internet coverage and TV options for the children. The bedrooms are just delightful and everyone commented on how well they slept. We celebrated a forthcoming 30th birthday with grandparents down to toddlers. The weather was kind to us and we walked several different paths into Melrose and back with ease. A truly exceptional break away from the everyday stresses and strains of city life! Thanks also to Linda for her help and prompt replies to all requests. (Sorry for the sticky fingerprints on the glass doors! )
Such a lovely house in a quiet location but so close to all the borders has to offer, Melrose and the Abbey, the wonderful Eildon Hills, the city of Edinburgh via train from Tweedbank. Spacious accommodation to suit three generations and great garden to explore. Linda (from Lowlands Lettings) is brilliant and responds so quickly to anything. Love the borders, love The Paper House - booked already for next year.
Used cottage as a base for playing golf at some of the excellent courses in the Borders.
Cottage has easy access to Melrose and it's excellent eateries.
Road leading down to cottage is quite tight and if you have a wider vehicle (like we did) it is manageable but needs steady hands!
Cottage has a lovely garden area if weather permits use. However the interior is a bit tired and could do with a bit of a renovation. Kitchen is old fashioned with poor layout. One of the upstairs bedrooms lacks headroom, ok for children but taller adults would find it a bit restrictive. Removal of bed legs just doesn't help with this problem.
Internet access was patchy and non-exec the upstairs, something that owners will be looking to resolve.
Overall it was an ok experience but cottage could be so much better with a bit of attention.
Overall experience was ok but could be
Melrose is a really attractive town with a range of independent shops, lovely abbey gardens and a fascinating history. A walk to thr top of the Eildon hill just outside Melrose provides great views.
The Old Paper House is really the best cottage we have ever stayed in. It has everything you could possibly need for a relaxing self catering stay, it was spotlessly clean on arrival, with a lovely welcome hamper. The house - it is really a house rather than a cottage - immediately felt like home. The garden is quite large and really well looked after. The River Tweed is a short walk from the house with a riverside walk into Melrose.
Dealing with Linda at Lowland Lettings was a pleasure, nothing was too much trouble for her, even with some last minute changes to the booking.
If you are looking for the best place to stay near Melrose, this has to be it.
Not stayed there but knew & visited past owners. It's a lovely house & garden in a beautiful village.
One thing to be aware of in June 2nd last weekend there is a gathering, just at boundry of house, for our local 'common ridings' All visitors are wellcome to join in too.
It's a small 15min local historic tradition.
We were in the area for a wedding and this property came up as a property that was available and the right size for our family group. It's a lovely cottage-style house with a generous garden so it felt very private. We all felt relaxed from the moment we arrived. There was some great hill walking and we walked into Melrose one afternoon which took only 20 minutes. Even the weather was great for our stay - end of May. I can seriously recommend The Old Paperhouse as a place to stay in the Borders.
