This is a beautiful hotel in a lovely setting. As we had nearly decided to stay there during our trip to Peebles, we thought we would visit and have lunch. On arriving at the hotel we went in the front door and stood in the hall for ages. There was an open door to what appeared to be an office but the person in there seemed to ignore us. We were not sure if it was reception as there did not appear to be a sign. We noticed a bell to be used for 'service' but decided to speak to the person in the office first. Apparently it was Reception. We were told that lunches were not being served but we could have soup or sandwiches. We were shown to the sitting room for food. Strangely although not serving food I noticed the dining room was set up and music playing in there when we went past. We had sandwiches which were fresh and scones but I think that they were probably made the day before as they were a bit hard which was a shame. It was also quite expensive.
The impression was of some disorganisation which was the feeling we had when enquiring about booking. Hopefully this will resolve as it is an ideal location.

We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea using a voucher purchased online. Living not far away we had often passed the entrance to the hotel but had not actually visited. We do know others who have stayed and eaten there though, all with glowing reports.

There's a long drive up to the hotel through lovely grounds, full of daffodils at the moment. The house is quite imposing but very welcoming. A huge log fire was burning in the entrance hall and staff we met were very friendly. There's a quietness to the place that is very calming. We were shown to a sitting room where others were having lunch or afternoon tea. We had leaf tea with a silver strainer, something I haven't seen for years, and it was so good. We ended up having a second pot. Also a 3 tier cake stand which was full of sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and many other sweet treats, all delicious.

I'd highly recommend Cringletie House to anyone looking for a little luxury, good food, friendly surroundings and grounds to roam around. It is also 5-10 minutes from Peebles which is a lovely town.

Lovely castle hotel in delightful setting. We had a great weekend away with a beautiful suite with nice views, the staff were attentive yet discreet and we felt very special. The restaurant is first class and we enjoyed a superb meal on our first night. All in all we could not fault anything, would strongly recommend.

Room Tip: Front of hotel with turrent suite

We had our wedding here on an exclusive use basis & it was fabulous. A particular mention goes to John Murphy, General Manager, and receptionist Anna, who couldn't do enough for us. Our celebration felt unique and every last minute request was arranged. The service was fantastic.

This is a remarkable place and is a hidden gem located only 30 mins away from Edinburgh. Cringletie House has been restored to an unbelievably level. The house has a wealth of period features – the woodwork in particular is fabulous. The staff really reinforce the idea of the ‘hospitality’ industry; something that is all too frequently lacking in some hotels. The staff are attentive without being intrusive and they certainly make you laugh! The food is also something I need to rave about. The dining room has been recently been beautifully redecorated and huge windows give a lovely light. We had dinner there and the scallop starter in particular was to die for. We really meant to do some sightseeing in the area as there is a lot to do in the Borders but I am afraid that we couldn’t drag ourselves away from the hotel! It does, however, give us the perfect excuse to come back…!

A very good welcome from the reception staff but subsequently the hotel sadly did not meet our expectations. Everywhere in the hotel there was constant intrusive music and the hotel was totally devoid of any character or atmosphere. There was a very strange mix of traditional furnishings with Mackintosh like furniture and lighting. This did not work and produced a soulless atmosphere. The bar was uncomfortable and cold and the sitting room had no heating on whatsoever. The dining room was also very cold. The food however was good but a waiter had great difficulty opening a bottle of wine and he explained that he never done this before. On eventually suceeding he put the bottle on the table and departed. There was little thought in the bathroom for practicalities, the one very small shelf for toiletries was above a radiator which melted the products placed upon it. It would not have been possible to read in the bedroom as the lighting was inadequate. The grounds were lovely but we left after one night as our stay would have not have been enjoyable.

Dear Elizabeth, thank you for your review.
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay, but thank you for your constructive criticism.
Obviously, the design and the style of the House and its rooms are not to your liking, but I cannot do much about it. Most people like it but that seems beside the point.
Regarding the temperature of the rooms; it is difficult if not impossible to get this right for everybody. We have invested heavily in a modern temperature control system in each of the public rooms; this means that the radiators will feel cold if the required temperature is achieved or exceeded, which can be the case, in particular because of our open fires in the rooms.
You make a valid point re the wine bottle; we have addressed this immediately as only our senior staff are allowed to open wine bottles, which did not happen on this occasion.
So, once again, we are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay.

We stayed here last April, and have eaten in the restaurant a couple of times since. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about Cringletie before, and had really been looking forward to our stay on 2 March. This was the first weekend of opening after the refurbishment. We were taken to our room by a member of staff who said it had been a busy weekend with nosy parkers! He was referring to the open weekend... We thought the garden room furniture wasn't in keeping with the lovely house. Our pop up waste in the bath didn't work, which was annoying. When you pay £250 for a night, you expect everything to be right. Our evening meal was ok, but the service definitely not the same, and I witnessed a few of the waiting staff leaning over diners to put down or collect plates. Breakfast - we were offered another table's order twice, and then our order was brought, but wrong, so had to go back. Not much apology. It didn't seem to matter. The house was also quite cold. Lots of open fires, but none were lit. Another guest asked for fire to be lit, which was done. We had already booked for a night in April before this visit, so we are hoping for better.

Dear Sandra T, thank you for your review. You are quite right, the new team is learning fast! You are also right about the price, it was £250 for a large number of extras, like glasses of champagne and a bottle of house wine. This was to celebrate our grand reopening. Having said that, loyal guests like you would have been entitled to 20% discount, so we end up with an all-inclusive day away including aperitif, dinner and a bottle of wine; all for £200; very good value according to most of our guests. But please email me directly to request this discount in case you have not been given the discount.
The temperature of an old building is rather complex and some find it too cold whereas others find it too warm; it is difficult to get it right for everybody. But some of our fires are on all the time, some are on standby and will be lit as soon as a guest request this.
We look forward to welcoming you again in April.
