I like the Tontine. The location is good and the service is very good. I had no real issues.

They cater for mountain bikers by giving a secure garage for your bike.

The food isn't bad and well priced.

The rooms I fear are quite noisy. I was lucky to have a room in the main hotel away from the main street (Saturday night stay). I could however hear everything from the room next door - and they came to bed late.

However, the room was a good size but the bathroom was in need of modernisation - which I believe is underway.

I'll probably stay again but will try to avoid the weekend.

Many thanks for your feedback regarding the Tontine. We are delighted that you are happy with the service you received from our team. We work hard to ensure our guests are happy with their stay.

We apologise for the noise you experienced from an adjoining room, this is not standard for us but we can appreciate on a busy night that there may be some issues. We do our best to manage this as best we can and always try to remind late arriving guests that there may be people sleeping nearby. As you noted we are currently refurbishing our bedrooms and corridors and are looking forward to having this completed in time for spring 2012.

Again, thank you for your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Tontine in the future.

Stayed at this hotel last night in order to see some jazz musicians playing in Peebles. location of hotel is great, right in the middle of town and from the outside it looks promising. However, inside is a whole other story. We had a room in the addition on the back of the hotel which looks like it was built in the early 1960s out of either cardboard, or at best, plywood. A complete eyesore from the outside. The inside is even worse. Although they have signs up saying they are in the process of "redecorating the corridors", they can redecorate all night long and will not be able to fix the basic problem which is poor construction. From our room we could hear every step anyone took in the hallway, the sound of every door opening and closing, the sound of every water pipe in the place when any guest turned on the tap or flushed a toilet, and even conversations from ther rooms. This place was the noisiest place I have been in a long time and not because the other guests were being noisy. The construction was soo poor every sound just traveled everywhere within the building. Both my husband and I have the White Noise Pro application (his on his phone, mine on my IPad) which makes all kinds of background noises to use when we travel to block out unfamiliar sounds. As an aside, this is a great App. We turn on the App when we go to sleep and I can honestly say it has always, in the past, blocked out unwanted sounds. We even rented a beach house last year where a construction crew next door showed up at 6 am every morning to build a new house and the App blocked out the sounds. Not so at the Tontine Hotel. How this place got a Scottish Tourist Board 3 star, I will never know. It would be lucky to be a 2 star. On top of everything else, breakfast was lousy. Where in Scotland do you not get porridge offered for breakfast? And zero fresh fruit of any kind. All tinned and floating in syrup. Yuck. Never again.

Room Tip: Maybe the rooms in the main part of the hotel are better. They can't be worse.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay with us. I’m disappointed to read of the problems you experienced and would have liked to have had the opportunity to discuss these issues with you before your departure.

I’m sorry to hear that you had a disappointing breakfast experience with us. Our breakfast menu features porridge as well as kippers; smoked haddock; smoked salmon with scrambled egg on a fresh muffin; a full vegetarian and full Scottish breakfast with choice of eggs. If you wanted any of the items listed above any one of our team would have been more than delighted to assist you. With respect to your comments regarding the lack of fresh fruit being available at breakfast, we already provide freshly prepared fresh fruit salad on the breakfast buffet, however we have taken your comments on board and will shortly introduce a fresh fruit basket or platter to complement the fresh fruit salad.

We appreciate that we can’t please everyone when it comes to our hotel’s exterior appearance but as I’m sure you understand there are some aspects of the hotel that we are unable to change. The exterior of our River Lodge extension is one of these. However, as you mentioned, we are currently refurbishing our bedrooms and corridors and have recently completed refurbishment to our public areas. We have focussed on these areas of the hotel for refurbishment as these are where our guests spend the majority of their time and there is no doubting that our recent upgrades have been well received.

Noise can always be an issue in hotels and we do our best to manage this as best we can. I was surprised, however, to read about the extent of the disturbance you experienced. We have been into our lodge bedrooms and listened for excessive noise as you described, without success, but we do appreciate that at night any sounds can be amplified. The only background noise we encountered came from the corridors. This is understandable as they are currently ‘bare’. Our corridor refurbishment includes re-fixing the wooden floors; new underlay; new carpets; painting the walls and ceilings and new bedroom doors, all of which should help to minimise any unwelcome noise.

We always do whatever we can to ensure our guest’s needs are met but unfortunately none of our team was aware of the issues you encountered throughout your stay. Had we been informed we would have done our best to resolve these issues, ensuring you had a more enjoyable stay.

have been going there annually for several years and is always very friendly and efficient. it seems to struggle to get better by doing so many different things. It seems hard to go from a B&B to a decent hotel. And then from a hotel to a Tea room. BUT the noise on the street will always be an issue and the doors slam in the corridoors - please can the rooms have loo brushes!!

Room Tip: ask for a quiet rooom in the main hotel (not in the annex) not facing the main road

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at the Tontine. We always strive to provide our guests with a great experience and we are delighted that you are happy with the service you continue to receive from the team.

We are currently working alongside the local police and local businesses with regards to noise issues on the High Street and have also spoken to our team to ensure that they manage noise complaints quickly and efficiently.

With regards to noise from within the hotel, our ongoing refurbishment programme is helping to reduce issues with doors banging in the hope that once completed noise issues will be eliminated.

Thank you again for your feedback and for letting us know how we might improve.

I spent 4 nights there from Aug. 31 - Sept. 3, 2011. The hotel is old (est. 1808) but well maintained. There is a nice lobby with an espresso bar and beyond that a large dining room. Our room was comfortable, had HD TV and was in the back part of the hotel where it was very quiet. Some people in our group had rooms at the front of the hotel and were greatly disturbed by the noise when the 2 nearby pubs closed each night. As we were a group of 24 (knitters from N. America) we ate from a set menu in the dining room with 3 or 4 choices for each of the 3 courses. We were not charged for water.

Peebles is a very quaint town on the River Tweed and I would visit there and stay at the Tontine again in a heartbeat as long as I didn't have a room at the front at the hotel.

Note: The hotel charges for Wifi but you can get connected for free across the street at The Crown Hotel. I recommend the front room of the pub (facing the street) for most comfortable environs for Internetting.

Room Tip: Do not accept a room at the front of the hotel. There are 2 popular pubs in the immediate vicinity from which noisy and drunk patrons exit.
