Stayed three nights over Christmas. Welcoming attentive staff. Good quality breakfasts. Lunch on one day was reasonably priced and well presented. You obtain the distinct impression that this family run hotel pay a lot of attention to motivating the staff to provide good customer service and we could see several impromptu meetings during our stay. The only downside is that the ugly flat-roofed extension on the river side of the old building that contains many of the rooms is reached by a covered enclosed bridge that is very old fashioned and furnished like a old people's home. The rooms themselves are well furnished and fitted. This hotel is probably the best place to stay in Peebles (we checked all the other options before booking here).

Room Tip: The rooms in the "extension" facing the old building (as against the south facing rooms ov...

We took my glamorous 88 year old mum in law for a run in the car on a beautiful winters day visited Biggar-no suitable winter boots there- on to the romantic high street of Peebles with its lovely old fashioned high street- mum in law got her boots now afternoon tea.
The shop manager recommended the Tontine.
The Tontine was a coaching inn in the 19th centuary-it is now a comfortable cosy hotel with stunning views of the hills from the dining area at the rear.
We wanted the view of the high street so had tea at the front.
Two of us had afternoon tea sandwiches scones cakes and shortbread the other two had soup cakes and coffee. There was so much food we all ate far too much-coffee and tea was excellent service was attentive
Spotless loos..
The hotel was busy even in January I would have no hesitation in staying there for a weekend break

Visited using an ~Itison voucher which included afternoon tea, overnight stay and breakfast. The decor is a little dull but overall the hotel is very welcoming and comfortable. I liked the sofas and cosy fire in the lounge and enjoyed the lovely afternoon tea. The staff were all consistently pleasant and helpful. I regretted arriving late in the afternoon as by the time I had eaten afternoon tea I was unable to consider dining in the hotel. This was a shame as the menu looked really nice. ~Our room, number 6 was on top floor up a shabby staircase. Dont let this put you off though as the room itself was nice; bit low ceilinged at window due to eaves so avoid if tall, and the bathroom was well laid out. Breakfast was in the Adams Room which was lovely. The breakfast was similarly good and I would definitely consider a return visit. I liked the small shops in Peebles High St and this hotel was ideally located for the shops. The hotel has parking.

Thank you for your review and for your positive comments regarding your stay. We would like to point out that we have been refurbishing bedrooms in the original house throughout 2012 and that we will redecorate the corridors this year. They are next on the list. Refurbishment and up-grade is constantly "on-going" as time and monies permit.
You also make a great observation about our central location, situated right at the heart of the town and we do look forward to welcoming you back again!

I organised an overnight visit for 22(dinner, B&B) An informal walking/social group of friends, 40 to 70+ yoa and they were unanimous in their praise.
From my first email contact to our Sunday morning goodbye everyone we came in contact with was delightful, friendly and efficient. They could not do enough to make our stay(even for one night) as easy and happy as possible. We, a disparate group of bedraggled, perspiring walkers were merged in comfortably with the regulars having afternoon tea in the imposing but relaxed lounge. When everyone emerged after showering etc they were enthusing about the rooms. The space, the size of the beds, the comfort and the warmth etc. We have experienced a lot of hotels in midwinter in Scotland and, believe me , warmth is important(but, sadly, not universal), The dinner was excellent, it was impossible to tell that we had got a great price for this budget deal. Served by friendly, efficient young staff who really knew how to serve a big group while keeping the restaurant going for the rest of their customers.
We had a function room provided for us for singing etc and a night porter who did not mind when the last stragglers went to bed. It made sure that we were not disturbing, even inadvertantly, anyone else and, therefore, relaxed us
It is hard to believe that I have written so much about one night. However the Tontine staff, from the owner(who took a personal interest) to the night porter, were instrumental in making our stay a joy and my life a lot easier. I must mention the young lads in the restaurant who handled the serving of this large, vociferous group with conspicuous, friendly and efficent aplomb. I also had 21 other opinions, with a vast expeience of hotels in all parts of the world to draw on.
The value for money was the best I have experienced in Scotland
I am sure we will return

My husband and I were gifted an Itison deal for this Hotel and prior to going read the reviews on Trip Advisor. We were a bit apprehensive after some of the review content was unfavourable, however this couldn't be further from the truth. We both found that from arriving to departing the staff, food, accommodation and ambiance were all faultless. We thought the food from the tea for 2 to our main meal at evening and breakfast the following morning were of a very high standard and portion size generous to say the least. The owner Kate provides a personal touch and is only to happy to help to make your stay as enjoyable as it should be. To summarise in our opinion the hotel has been given some bad reviews without foundation. Having used several hotels in the Borders we would highly recommend the Tontine Hotel.

My hubby and I loved this itison deal. We had high tea and prosecco on arrival after checking out room number 4. The room was a good size and was to a very clean standard. The bathroom was fine - not too swanky but definitely an alright size and again clean. There is an environment policy in this hotel and they had paper disposable shampoo/body wash and body lotion, probably ideal if two of each were there for a couple - we weren't affected as we often take our own toiletries but if you have packed light then bag the shower first or prepare for a squabble over the lack of shower gel :-)

I have to say the decor in this hotel is really classy. The rooms had gorgeous curtains and also matching accessories. We loved the lounge and the service there was exceptional. The breakfast was lovely but we felt a bit too salty. All in all a lovely experience.

Hope to return :-) thanks to Cat Stevens et al....
