“Short Break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014

I found this hotel to be very comfortable , if maybe a little dated in places . We had dinner on the first evening which was very nice , and breakfast was also very good and there was a lovely selection . The only down side to my stay was that our room was at the very bottom of the hotel which was two flights of stairs plus a long corridor away , just as well we didn't need any help with our bags as no one offered. The room itself was lovely and looked to be only newly refurbished and it was spotlessly clean so well done the cleaners . Also the ladies toilets are a long way away from the bar area and not very well sign posted . Most of the staff were very very helpful and I would not hesitate to stay in this hotel again :)

Thank you very much "Skybird2008", a great review for us to reflect upon. I also hope you appreciated the "contemporary" style of the refurbishment which has kept and indeed brought the "old style" alive and very much up to date.
We were delighted to read your positive comments regarding our service and hotel facilities.

Popped in for a drink, and decided to book an afternoon tea whilst here on holiday. There are not many of these old style charm hotels left. Warm, courteous staff, welcomed by a front of house gentleman (which is lovely to see).
We cosyed up at the open fire and enjoyed our afternoon tea.
Would love to visit again
Thank you, enjoyed the traditionalism, and intrigued by the definition of the name 'Tontine'.

Thank you "Skybird 2008" for taking time to post your review. So pleased you enjoyed your drinks and Afternoon Tea. We do continue to invest and improve the hotel and we were delighted to read that your overall impression was very good indeed. We hope that our refurbishment does improve and "contemporise" the hotel , while keeping the traditional and "old style" very much alive!
So gald you enjoyed your stay!

The history of the creation in 1808 of the Tontine Hotel in Peebles must be unique. French prisoners of war? Must be in Napoleon's time! Were they forced to work on the building? In any case, the hotel is beautifully built, and the original part, although squeezed between other buildings in the centre of the town, retains a symmetry which can still be appreciated. The dining room alone is worth five stars! Oh, you can but admire.. the windows (the view isn't bad either!)... and the fireplace ...and the ceiling! All the staff we met were pleasant, informative and kind and the food (two evening meals and three breakfasts) was very good, well presented and served. The bedroom, with a similar view of hills and the river, was spacious, warm and comfortable. The remote control of the TV was easy to work! (Perhaps I was just having a good day!). Peebles is in an area well worth visiting within easy reach of Edinburgh as well as the Borders and all their beautiful buildings and countryside, and there is a Botanic Garden nearby, too. We have been retired for over ten years and found plenty to please us in the literature provided by the Tontine Hotel. There is an interesting book about all the businesses in Peebles in the entrance hall, which includes a potted history of the hotel. Open fire in the comfortable lounge area was lovely. The Bar could be better designed and lit, and had sofas which were rather difficult to get out of when you are over a certain weight. These aspects of the Bar are my only criticism, since it also had an open fire, which we liked, and a good sized television, which most people would like, and excellent staff. Please fix the design of the Bar before our next visit!

Room Tip: We asked for easy access to a bedroom, which still meant going down some stairs (the hotel has an ex...

Thank you "Roslyn B" for a great review, our "Spring break offer " this year was particularly successful and we were all delighted to learn, that you enjoyed your stay and visit to Peebles and "The Tontine".
Very glad to read that you found the history of "The Tontine" so interesting. We have enjoyed adding our history as "Custodians" of the hotel as we further develop the bedrooms and restore the grand dining room and lounges as you so described. We will in time see what we can do with the bar area! Perhaps we can discuss this further during your next visit?
Many thanks again, Kate , Gordon Innes & "The Tontine Team"

Our visit to the Tontine was by way of a Christmas gift. We know Peebles very well and have dined at the Tontine on many occasions, but this visit was the first time we have been resident. We were most impressed by the courtous staff and that they were only too pleased to go that extra mile. We have travelled to many parts of the world, staying in many hotels, but we suggest that the Tontine matches many of the aspects of high quality standards which we have experienced. Our bedroom was very well decorated; the menu and food in the main restaurant of high quality and of good choices. The general ambiance of the hotel was excellent and a credit to Kate and her staff. We will most definately return and would have no hesitation in recommending the Tontine.

Just returned from one night stay , We took our dog and we had a nice room to the back which had a lovely view over the river , We really enjoyed our one night all the staff here were so nice and friendly , they all go out off their way to help with anything , We were DBB , mainly because we can eat with the dog beside us at the bar , but the food was really nice , and I am a fussy eater so if we return which we hope to, we would do the DBB again The room was very clean although maybe not a white cover on the bed when a dog is staying , I have read some of the bad reviews and it seems to be because of noise outside , this can not be the hotels fault and really dont think this should be taken into account ,we had no noise . I would recommend a visit here if you are visiting Peebles . Only thing I would say is I could not connect to the wifi , but my husband did , so I did go to the b/b accross the road as I need the wifi and got connected there no password required , but wifi is a bugbear with me as I need it and it should be free in all hotels in all areas . My other suggestion would be to have dog bowls of water left out .

Thank you "Sandy09Edinburgh" for writing such a positive review and indeed we are delighted you enjoyed "a nice restful break". You make many nice comments and recommendations and the kitchen team have enjoyed reading your excellent review of our service and food.
I was sorry to learn of the "wifi" problems, it is free here, with recent up-grades should not be difficult to connect. Also very glad to learn that your "best friend" enjoyed our facilities, having taken the decision to join you for dinner in the bar. We hope to welcome you all back soon!

I have visited and stayed at a number of 3 star hotels in the UK but never one like this. From the minute we walked in the door to the minute we left following our family reunion w/end we were treated to the highest standards of hospitality, service, food and a genuine feeling that Kate and her staff were there to make our w/end special. 30+ people on the Friday night and 40+ on the Saturday. This hotel is also situated smack in the middle of the lovely borders town of Peebles. Used both the smaller dining room, (Buchan) and the main dining room, (Adam). Bedrooms spotless and all public areas very well appointed. The hotel were more than happy to help us with entertainment for the w/end giving us contact details for performers and allowed us use of their sound system for our music. Well done to all at the Tontine Peebles. Great w/end.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the more recently refurbished rooms with river view

We just recently spent a weekend in the Tontine celebrating a family reunion. Thirty adults from age 30- 80 and ten young children. Kate and her staff made us all feel so welcome and we had a fabulous time in the comfort of the hotel whilst enjoying a wonderful food experience. Roaring open log fires to greet us in the lounge and a staff who went above and beyond to please. Overall a wonderful weekend and great vaue for money.

Many thanks "william vance22" for such a "first class" review following the family re-union weekend, which we also enjoyed very much. It was very satisfying for the hotel and the team to see such a great bunch of folk and family enjoying themselves, which is after all what the hospitality business is all about!
We would all love to think that "The Tontine" is possibly on the agenda for a future "get together" for the Vance family, we would love to do it all again!
Best wishes to you all from Kate, Gordon Innes and "The Tontine Team".
