When three old friends decide to enjoy a few days together, hiking around the countryside, they need a base from which to set out after a good breakfast, and to which they can return in the hope of a warm welcome, a good evening meal and a comfortable bed. The Tontine supplied all the above, delivered by a staff team who seem to work well together for the comfort of their guests. The food was excellent and the bed was of a very high quality. The reception staff were efficient and willing to provide all the little extras we asked for, from a plaster for my little blister, to Jim's eccentric American need for an ice bucket. In particular, Lauren was a charming and smiling helper, who even seemed to understand our sense of humour. Jim, Hal and Ian would not hesitate to stay at the Tontine in future.

Just returned from another stay at the Tontine which has now become our default place to stay when mountain biking at Glentress. This time we had friends with us who also stayed and who normally stay elsewhere in the area.

I was pleased to see that Kath and Gordon are continuing their quest to upgrade the hotel; with new carpets being laid throughout the common areas and parking spaces being marked on the newly resurfaced car park. These are serious investments and often get put at the bottom of a refurb list, so well done. The downside of this is that the upgrading programme of the bedrooms seems to have slowed. Room 44 is smashing with a contemporary feel whereas Room 43 feels old fashioned. Room 43 is far from tatty and everything is in good order but it seems out of step with the rest of the hotel.

As ever the staff were great with everyone making a real effort to make us feel welcome. Sometimes there were a few slip ups with 'technical' hospitality skills e.g. the waiter not knowing what an Ecclefechan Tart was and having to ask in the kitchen or slow coffee service in the lounge after dinner. However, these were minor and could easily be ironed out with ongoing training.

Other reviewers have commented on the narrow restaurant/bistro menu. I would respond by saying that whilst I might agree about the breadth of what's available, the quality and quantity was perfect. A specials board could easily provide extra variety and an additional opportunity to showcase seasonal Scottish or local produce.

So, overall a great stay. We love the Tontine. Our friends were impressed too...and we have already started looking at diaries to find dates for another visit in the autumn.

Thank-you "968944" for taking time to post your review. Like many of our guests we were glad to read you enjoyed a "great Easter break". Thank you also for your feedback regarding our refurbishment programme, with the dining room our latest area to benefit from new carpeting.
You are right however, the bedroom programme has "slowed" albeit temporarily. Fear not, it will resume, as we have great plans to continually improve and upgrade "The Tontine".

Good place to stay if you are over 25.
Two major issues and a couple of niggles.
Daughter and I stayed here for one night as part of her 18th birthday celebrations. When booking this hotel back in February- this fact was mentioned to the lovely receptionist who confirmed our arrangements.
The location is spot on- great for local walks and other activities- though I found the rear car park a little tricky to find initially.
Room was basic but acceptable- in need of a little sprucing up, but no complaints. We noticed the hotel is having a revamp as new carpets were being laid. Views at the back across the river and hills were just great.
Our plan was to do a couple of walks then have cocktails before dinner. I admit we did not look our best when we decided to have a swift drink before getting showered and changed, however, I was not expecting to be stopped from having a drink with my daughter in the bar. I was told that there is a local policy that anyone up to the age of 25 must take ID to be served in the bar. Even after ordering an orange juice, we were asked to leave and sit in the lounge! As there were no free seats- we were left standing in the hallway which was rather humiliating and spoilt the 'treat' for my daughter.

At dinner- daughter was told she could have an alcoholic drink. Surely non-sensical double standards? How can she not be allowed in bar area with a fruit drink but be able to order alcohol with the meal?

Menu was limited and more bar/ pub grub ( scampi and chips, ale pie, haddock and chips, with a couple of extras) I ordered the rump of lamb and asked for it medium/pink. I was told it is always sent out medium, though I had already spotted the lamb served on the table next to ours- definitely over cooked. No surprises when it was served with not an ounce of pink. Bringing this to the attention of the waitress, I was told 'well chef had made it anyway when your starters were brought out'...poor excuse.
The puds were terrific- creme brûlée and chocolate tart. Yummy.
Breakfast was fine except for the very poor haggis. I noticed there were veggie and gluten free options which is unusual ( recent posh 5 star hotel didn't even have veggie sausages on offer). So well done Tontine for this.

Thinking about this trip on way back to the North East- if a young couple wanted a romantic weekend away- it would be sensible to bring your driving license or passport as they would not be served in the bar. I would have been happy to bring daughter's passport if I had been informed of the hotel and local area policy. This is not cited on the website- nor in reception area or outside hotel ( nor other venues in town either)
Can't recommend and won't be returning.

Dear Julie T

Thank you for taking the time to constructively review your stay here at the Tontine. You make many excellent comments which we have raised with the relevant teams throughout the hotel.

The main crux of your issue with the hotel appears to be our refusal to serve your daughter an alcoholic beverage whilst in the bar. Your hotel reservation did state that you were here to celebrate your daughter’s birthday however unfortunately there was no note of it being an 18th birthday, for which we apologize.
By asking your daughter to provide proof of age we were merely adhering to the licensing laws that exist throughout Scotland. In October 2011, the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 was amended by the introduction of a new mandatory condition for all premises licenses and occasional licenses. This provides that there must be an age verification policy in relation to the sale of alcohol on the premises. The law has set a minimum age of 25 years for the policy where it appears to the person selling the alcohol that the customer may be under the age of 25 years. As a result of this change in the law the ‘Challenge 25’ initiative was introduced (http://www.challenge25.org) such that customers in any premises in Scotland licensed for the sale of alcohol, including pubs, clubs, restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores may be asked to produce identification where they appear under the age of twenty five to prove that they are over the age of eighteen and can lawfully purchase alcohol. Despite possibly seeming to be ‘double standards’, these same licensing laws do enable us to serve young adults between the ages of 16yrs and 18yrs, wine, Perry, cider or beer in our restaurant whilst they are enjoying a sit down meal with an accompanying adult. Failure to adhere to these laws can incur hefty fines for us, the licensees.
If you can, we would be delighted to have you return with your daughter (with Passport or Driving license) I think we owe you both a Cocktail (or two!) a belated birthday gift!

The Tontine Hotel in Peebles is a great location to explore the Tweed Valley and surrounding areas and has some great walking and cycling routes which some start and finish in the town.
The accommodation is of a high standard as is the food which starts with breakfast and continues throughout the day, finishing with an excellent choice of evening meals all of which are cooked to high standards.
All the staff are very polite and helpful and are a credit to the owners Gordon and Kate.
With the hotel only a short drive away from Edinburgh it is an ideal alternative to the more expensive city hotels.
We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of visiting the area.

Actually stayed here over two months ago on an Itison deal but sadly forgot to review at the time, not sure why though as this place is excellent.

On arrival we were slightly put out by not having anywhere to park and on a horrendous day in February had to park about 1/2 mile away as the rear car park was being renovated. We did however move our car to a nearer spot later - no drama.

Hotel room was big with a comfy kingsized bed. Evening meal was decent in the hotel and breakfast was great. Staff were friendly too so struggling for any negatives. Dont be fooled by the slightly run down exterior as inside the Tontine (in my view) is up to scratch and we plan to return next time we have a borders break

Thank-you "EdinburghBhoy1971" for taking time to post this great review. Super feedback for us to reflect upon plus a couple of little negatives.
Car Parking: Newly "re-surfaced" car park to the rear of the hotel with 16 "marked" spaces together with 8 spaces to the front of the hotel. I would also advise future guests that if no car parking can be found immediately upon arrival, park up to the front of the hotel, "unload" luggage, "check-in" and our Reception team can advise of further car parking facilities very close by to the hotel.
Hotel frontage due for a "re-paint" job this year, early Summer!
Be sure to return and give us your feedback!
Many thanks again, Kate, Gordon Innes & "The Tontine Team".

The Tontine Hotel in Peebles delivers consistently excellent food and service. We had another gathering today with 35 members present, and the prearranged menu, with three choices over three courses, plus sorbet after starters and tea/coffee to round off the meal, were all of a high standard and received with much enthusiasm. Highly recommended for good food, efficient and friendly service.

Just returned from our third stay at the tontine in the last 12 months. This is an excellent independent hotel, lovely location backing onto the tweed and with delightful walks close by, which was ideal as we took our dog this time, he was welcome in the bar where a full menu is available. The food is lovely, staff are lovely, the hotel is lovely. We will definately be there again soon
