Excellent ambience and food were enjoyed by us in May 2004. We appreciated the faintly eccentric air, and found the level of comfort and cuisine, together with the courteous, friendly service, to be elements guaranteeing our return. This a charming hotel and it is unfair of you to lead with that jaundiced review of December 2003.

Stayed here for a night and felt obliged to write a more positive review after almost being put off by the poor review here.

The hotel is traditional and the staff very welcoming. The lounge is comfortable, dark wood panelled bar cosy and the dining room impressive, with high ceiling and picture windows.

The twin bedroom room was large and clean and bathroom excellent. I would recommend paying the extra for a room with a rear view over the river Tweed and hills beyond.

Didn't chance to eat an evening meal in the hotel but the breakfast was excellent.

We stayed at the Tontine (20-22Feb 2004) -the hotel is a traditional hotel with an air of a country house -welcoming and relaxing sitting room with an open fire. The dining room is "grand" with chandaliers and a "minstrel gallery"and distant views over the river. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent -the evening meal was of a particular high standard-based on traditional Scots fare- on the two nights we stayed, the dining room was full- with a combination of residents and locals-always a good sign. We stayed in the older part of the hotel the rooms were clean, cosy ( chintzy) and we had views over the Tweed. We had one problem with the shower unit -I mentioned to the Receptionist on our way out in the morning and on return it was fixed. We would not hesitate in recommending the Tontine for a relaxing stay with good food in a friendly hotel (and market town)

We spend the Valentine's weekend at the Tontine and had such an excellent time I felt compelled to write this after reading the terrible review given by another guest on this website. The room was extremely nice and for once the pillows were so comfortable I wanted to keep them. The bathroom was modern and clean and generally of a very high standard. Given it was Valentines day we also received a basket of massage oils and bathroom treats. The food was outstanding matched only by the extremely efficient service - which was attentive yet non-obstrusive. Also included in the weekend package was a bottle of champagne - we were offered a half bottle each evening if we preferred and it was waiting at our table each evening. Newspapers were delivered promptly each morning. Out of the whole weekend the only fault was that my boyfriend found the dining room to be a little cool (though warmer clothing would have been a more than adequate solution). I unreservedly recommend this hotel.

The Tontine Hotel at Peebles claims to be 3-star. Externally, the Hotel is a well appointed Georgian building, in the centre of the pleasant town of Peebles. But, from the moment you walk in and see the 1970s formica reception desk, you know the place is going to be a disappointment. Most of the accommodation is situated in a 'modern' block at the rear of the old building. Nothing wrong with that and many hotels do the same. But the accommodation block looks like a tired army barracks. The decor is tired and the fixures and fittings are tatty. The only good thing I can say about the accommodation is that the shower pressure is excellent. The public rooms are passable and the bar is pleasant enough, though the management failed to remove a particularly unpleasant and offensive drunk while I was there, in spite of his verbal insults to staff and guests. Could it have been something to do with him being the hired fiddle player? The dining room, a fine Georgian room, is spoilt by bad decoration, poorly hung pictures and a generally cold atmosphere. In sum, avoid this Hotel like the plague, it's awful.
