“Great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2010

Perfect location on the High Street. A friendly welcome at reception and efficient check in. The hotel's public areas had a good feel, busy and obviously a popular place to meet. Our room (33) was OK, a little dated, particularly the bathroom with its green tiles. Not exactly a superior room and therefore overpriced. Roomy and comfortable, however, everything clean and the bed was fine. Great view overlooking the River Tweed and the hills in the distance. Breakfast - quick and friendly service, the cooked part was very good and there was plenty of choice. Poor selection of cereals, no fresh fruit and the porridge was awful (lumpy and indigestible). I would stay again and recommend to a friend but with the aforementioned caveats.

Stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. It is right in the middle of the main street in Peebles, which is full of lovely independent shops - no high street chains here - what a breath of fresh air. There is a lovely relaxing ambience in the hotel, which dates from 1808. There is a modern bedroom extension to the rear which is totally out of character with the rest of the hotel. Room was comfortable and clean, unfortuntely we did not have any sort of a view but where room was located meant that it stayed cool during the hot weather we were having, and quiet at night - a big plus. Room service could have been quicker, but staff were always friendly and polite. Breakfast was served in the fabulous Adams style dining room and was very good - starting with a buffet of the usual fruit juices, croissants, cereals, grapefruit etc. plus tea/coffee and toast. Plenty to choose from when it came to the cooked breakfast section, which was also excellent. Good meals served in the bar area during the evening. Good off street parking provided - useful as main street has a time restriction on it. Lovely walks along the River Tweed and plenty of coffee shops and pubs/restaurants in 5-10 mins walk. Easy access to Edinburgh/Roslyn Chapel/Tarquair House etc. and plenty of other things to do in surrounding 25 miles or so. All in all a very comfortable central place to stay. I would recommend it to anyone and hope to return again.

I booked our party of 6 into the hotel for dinner at around 17.30 and was offered several times - one of which was perfect. On arrival we were clearly expected and offered a very warm welcome.
There was a choice of 2 comfortable and spacious dining areas, We were offered drinks immediately, these were served straight away to allow us to look at the menu at our leisure. The orders were then promptly taken and within a few minutes we were all enjoying our meal. All the courses were excellent in terms of quality, quantity, presentation and price with our very attentive waiter occasionally enquiring as appropriate if we needed further drinks.
We ended the meal with coffee and complimentary mints.
The whole atmosphere in the hotel contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I look forward to eating there again.
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending dining at this hotel.
Dave

We stayed a single night in Room 5 (right at the top at the front of the hotel). The room could not be faulted, clean, very well furnished, comfortable bed and near immaculate bathroom though the bathroom window could do with a lick of paint and the seal between bath and wall had speckles of mould - nice big fluffy bath towels (thanks!).

We didn't have dinner at the Tontine but the breakfast was first class; very polite and attentive waitresses, a good choice of menu (it was the first time I've eaten haggis and a 'tattie scone' - the haggis was delicious!); good coffee too.

Our only gripe was the noise from the pub opposite which didn't stop until very late; the customers were out on the pavement, an unusual occurence we were told the next morning. Also, the High Street, onto which the Tontine fronts, is the A72 and the Peebles doesn't have a by-pass. We were woken by lorries grinding through the town at 6am and this on a bank holiday Monday - double glazing would have helped.

There is limited parking at the front of the hotel with more space (free) at the back though down quite a steep slope; best to park at the front to unload/load when arriving/departing.

We'd definitely stay again but not in a room at the front.

Stayed here 1 night on business, young man on desk kindly walked down to (free) car park & collected my case for me then carried it up to my room.I was very grateful it was extremely heavy ! Room was immaculate, super comfy bed best nights sleep I have had in a hotel in a long time.Fantastic bathroom, well equipped and cleaned to a high standard.Loved the complimentary toilitries I tried thm all,Ate in restraunt in the evening excellent food, superbly cooked, had local steak and was amazing.Breakfast was also piping hot and to a very high standard.Service was friendly and welcoming.
Had a lovely book about the town which was lovely to flick through, trouser press was also useful.
You even get a teapot that pours without spilling in your room.
I loved it from start to finish it was charming.
Negatives:Stair carpets on 1st floor and up a bit shabby, windows comensearate with age of hotel but not good on noise reduction.
I have taken lots of pictures too I stayed in room 5 and I would happily recommend this hotel.
Dine here you will not regret it.

The pictures on the hotels website led us into a false sense of security. Our room was not in the main building but in the annexe at the back of the hotel. To get to the room we had to go through the lounge, bistro (past all the diners), down some stairs into a link corridor. This link corridor reminded me of an old people's home for some reason. The seals on the double glazed window units have gone and the glass looks dirty and grubby. When we opened the doors to the floor of our room it was very dark, dingy and again grubby. The doors to the room scratched, holes where previous locks have been, Our room albeit recently decorated it would appear had cobwebs on the ceiling, marks on the wall and the bathroom tiles were stained and could have done with a wipe down, shower curtain stained and not clean. The tub chair in the room was in serious need of cleaning. It was stained with paint and was very dusty and needed a good hoover. Our room looked back on the hotel and we had the noise from the kitchen extractor fans and then bottles being taken out from the bar. The slogan used by the hotel is that we go that extra mile, not much evidence on our visit I'm affraid.

We are really sorry to hear that you were not pleased with your stay at the Tontine Hotel. As you will see from other Trip Advisor Reports we have got some very satisfied customers and we pride ourselves in the service that we bring to our guests.

We are in the process of refurbishing the annexe rooms as well as investing in a new garden and double glazing. As a private owned family concern these things take time though as stated we have an on going programme and have completed the public areas and many of the bedrooms. We do though make sure that this is reflected in the price that we charge for the annexe. As you will have seen from the public areas we do refurbish to a high standard.

We like to speak to customers who are not satisfied direct and do not have a record of your complaint. We would like to talk this through with you and ask that you email Kate Innes one of the owners at kate.innes@tontinehotel.com or phone and ask for Kate on 01721 720892.

Just back from weekend mountain biking Glentress, 1 st class!!.
Stayed in Tontine on dinner bed and breakfast deal. 2 adults, two kids 12 and 10 years.
Hotel is an older one and very charming. Rooms are comfortable but could do with a spruce up. Beds comfy and copious hot water . Hotel has a relaxing lounge area wtih good atmosphere and modern decor and and what can only be described as an excellent restaurant. Hats of to the chefs for three superb dinners! Staff wonderfull, drinks keenly priced. Peebles itself is a beautifull town and the area is fantastic.
From what we could see this is one of the best hotels in Peebles and we will most definately reurn. Thanks to everyone at the Tontine.
