“Great in every way”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

We booked this hotel for a group of 3 friends looking for a rather active holiday, with some cycling and a bit of sightseeing. This turned out to be the best choice we could ever have made... To start, the hotel itself was very nice and was beautifully located. The room was very large and comfortable, with lots of storage space. The included breakfast was very good and so was the dinner, at a reasonable price. The bar was an enjoyable place to be in the evening. But most important of all, the owners were the best I can imagine. In addition to offering great service, they were very friendly and showed a lot of interest in what we were doing. We were pleasantly surprised when they found us a enthusiastic local cyclist offering great bikes for touring around Selkirk. Overall, I couldn't have felt more welcome than during our stay in the Glen Hotel!

A good welcome to this place, which has the potential to be very good, but a few things let it down. We had the four poster room, which is large, with a sofa. However, the layout means that there is a lot of free space, but only one bad side table ( the position of the bathroom door means that there is nowhere to put one the other side, meaning that if you want to read in bed, you have to use the main light and then get out to switch it off). The food we had was decidedly average/poor (although I think this was just an unfortunate one off in the case of my dinner). We have been spoilt on our trip by places providing amazing food through the use of fantastic ingredients - maybe a little more investment in the basis content of the meals would make things amazing instead of OK. The room was not cheap, and to be honest, I felt the whole thing was a little overpriced for what we got. It was OK, but nothing more.

I stayed 5 nights at the Glen and wished I didn't have to leave! I was made very welcome by Steve and Antoinette, Steve also cooked some superb meals in the evenings. It was very pleasent to sit in the bar and chat with them and other guests. The Hotel was spotlessly clean, my room very comfortable.
Selkirk is a good base for exploring and there is so much to see around this area. Countryside is fantastic especially in the good weather I was blessed with.
All in all, I would strongly recommend the Glen and would certainly stay there again if I go back to that part of the country.

We took over the whole hotel for my Mother's 80th birthday and Steve & Antoinette couldn't do enough for the family. Steve devised a great Treasure Hunt for us, arranged Clay Pigeon Shooting and prepared a fantasic feast for us all, over the weekend.
The scenery around Selkirk is fantastic; there's loads to do, whether it's fishing, walking, golfing, a day at Kelso races, a stoll down the banks of The Tweed or shopping in the quaint shops of Melrose.
I'd recommend this hotel for couples wanting to escape city life for the weekend, golfers or fishermen. Steve keeps a good few beers on draught and is handy in the kitchen. Antoinette is good at standing behind the bar and chatting. Since my Mother's 80th, myself and my wife have returned many times and look forward to next time. I understand comments about the decor being a bit old-fashioned but this is a Victorian building - in Scotland. You couldn't really expect owt else!

Room Tip: 4 poster in room 1, massive bed in room 2

We have stayed in The Glen several times so were really pleased to receive a last minute offer from Steve and Antoinette for Easter weekend! We were made to feel very welcome by Antoinette on arrival. Our booking was for the four poster room which is huge with large bay windows overlooking the Ettrick Water valley and hills beyond, just lovely at all times of the day. There is a lovely en suite with huge shower and heated towel rail which is always welcomed. The room has been tastefully refurbished recently and would make an ideal bridal suite!

There is so much to do in the beautiful borders so would recommend a holiday there and of course the best place to stay is The Glen Hotel!

The food at The Glen is always to a high standard, cooked by Steve. My need for a gluten free diet was remembered which was really exceptional given that it is a few months since we were last there. It is a real treat for me to have gluten free battered fish, so enjoyed it on both nights of our stay.

Everything at The Glen is to a high standard and is definitely our favourite hotel! Hope to return many times.

Room Tip: The four poster room is great with wonderful views over the Ettrick Water valley.

Missing this place already! The food is just fantastic, Steve does a great job in the kitchen. The hotel is in a perfect location for outdoorsy types who love to explore. The hotel is right by the river which is the perfect location for a stunning morning run or less energetic post breakfast walk. The hotel is dog friendly too, a great bonus given that there are so many beautiful walks near by.
