Most tourists to Scotland head North to the Highlands and miss the glories of the area which you reach if you turn right as you come over the border and head west towards Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and beyond.
The Raiders Road is an opportunity to see the hidden delights of the Galloway Forest. The views are fantastic, lochs and rivers, trees, wildlife - something for everyone to appreciate. Whilst it is an off road road, the road is made up to a standard that any vehicle could drive it. There is a £2 charge for using the road and this is self administered by ticket machines at either end of the road. The ticket is then valid for the rest of the day.
Make sure you camera has plenty of spare memory as you will soon use it up.
A trip alone this road can easily be combined with a trip to the Red Kite feeding station at Bellymack Hill Farm, Laurieston which is just 10 minutes south from the eastern end of the road. The Kites are fed every day at 2pm.
As we live only ten minutes from it will get plenty of use until it closes for the Winter..
