We visited on Sunday afternoon as Moat Brae is closed all day Monday. Our entrance to the house and garden was £6.50 each but if you just want to visit the café and look at the shop in the entrance; that's free.
There's lots of interesting information to read, see and touch in the house which is over 4 levels (with a lift). Children up to the age of 7 will be surprized to see the thought that's gone into the building - just for them.... x
The gardens are also well designed with great, fun ideas to keep everyone smiling.
This is a definite place to visit and is well overdue with all the history it entails regarding Mr JM Barrie - a very caring gentleman.
Hopefully it will bring lots of families to the beautiful area of Dumfries & Galloway; it should!

Popped in for a look around as only opened on saturday if you wish to see the exhibitions you have to pay however can visit the wee shop or cafe which is what we did pity you cannot sit out in the stunning gardens however cafe is surrounded by glass so you can have a good view, only had coffee which i would say is slightly more expensive than other establishments as the cups are quite small however very nice and staff were very friendly especially i think her name was penny

Today I visited the newly opened Moat Brae ... and left this most unique home of the imagination with a light, happy heart, full of magic, my life the better for the experience.

We’ve been waiting with bated breath for the opening of Moat Brae’s celebration of all that is JM Barrie and his most marvellous of creations, Peter Pan. Three generations (nana, mum and 10-year-old daughter) were concerned that it would not live up to our high expectations. However, we could not have anticipated that it would surpass even the highest of our imaginings.

The essence of the creation of Peter Pan by the brilliant Barrie fills every space of this wonderful building and its grounds, transcending age. There is such a mix of different media that breathe life to the imagination that it is difficult to put into words what the whole is. From the dining table of Barrie’s boyhood, his boyhood ‘pirate cronies’ forever at his side, through the elegant drawing room where those who believe in fairies can clap and hear the original Tinker Bell, into the library full of imaginings, past a breathtaking dolls house, to the attic with its theatre, scripts and dressing up box with the opportunity to catch Tinker Bell & Peter’s shadow, with a basement to allow children’s imaginations a free run .... we were
captivated.

Add to this plenty of chairs, cushions and under-the-stair spaces to curl up with a good book and let your mind escape to another world and you have Moat Brae.

We had so much to experience indoors that we are going to have to revisit to explore the wonderful gardens, the river and its pirate galleon ... I’m delighted to report!

And by the way (as someone who has a great deal of experience of good things to eat and drink!), the cafe is superb with melt-in-the-mouth delights that surely have magic and love in every bite.

Enjoy!!!
