“Xmas at Cairndale”
Reviewed 31 December 2012

This hotel must have an expensive heating bill, as the whole place was very hot and stuffy constant creaky floors were a nusance esp when trying to rest late at night, overall not a bad stay breakfast was generally good but, Xmas day lunch was shambolic, everyone was crammed in around too small tables and had to wait for what seemed like forever for each course to arrive, evening buffet consisted of cold meats desserts etc left over from the Xmas lunch.
Not very impressed with that!

Room Tip: Try to ask for one which has no creaking floors

I have personally taken time to respond to this review and to be honest words fail me.
Anyone who reads other reviews from guests who stayed over the Christmas period will be able to decide for themselves about the contents of the review.
As far as the actual feedback from the reviewer is concerned we served a Four Course Lunch with Coffee to around 200 guests in the hotel on Christmas Day. The service of this meal was completed in less than two hours with many favourable comments made on the day.
The hotel was fully booked over a four day period and we already have 3 large parties (over 100 guests) who have rebooked for 2013.
The comments about the evening buffet are quite simply inaccurate.

I stayed two nights in October 2012 on a group golf package (Powfoot, Silloth, Southerness). All facets of the hotel were quite good but not exceptional. The rooms are small but comfortable with excellent showers. The food was good with a plentiful buffet breakfast and the dinners in the evening had a reasonable menu choice; I thought that the downstairs location for the bar and grill is a little dull without any windows or natural light. Due to the very wet weather, Michael Dickie, the golf coordinator , was very busy in trying to get us on the golf courses, but persevered and was a great help. Unfortunately, because of the very poor weather, I did not see much of Dumfries itself.

I was delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your recent golf trip to the hotel.
As you know we have our own golf coordinator in the hotel and I was pleased to hear that Michael was able to sort out your golf arrangements during your stay.

Super value for money. Reception needs improving in terms of being aware of guests. Apart from this slackness a very good hotel.Breakfast was superb and all for £34. A shame Dumfries is not as good as the Cairndale.

We booked this hotel for a couple of reasons one of which is due to us staying at the hotel previously and the second foe it's locality to the town centre which again we knew about.

The hotel has a very friendly atmosphere to it and the rooms are comfortable and worth the money. The hotel seems to have a very good impact on the locals when they find out that you have booked rooms there, i think they look upon it as a high standard hotel.

We booked the single rooms and although they were small in size the room had everything we needed, tea/coffee making facilities, trouser press, wardrobe, comfortable bed with extra bedding if required, central heating and one of the best showers i've had.

The morning breakfast was good also consisting of a number of fruit juices and cereals, some pastries and of course the traditional cooked scottish breakfast served buffet style. Tea, coffee and toast are served fresh.

Check in and out were speedy and the staff very welcoming.

Although we didn't use the restaurant we did see and smell some of the food other guests had ordered and it looked and smelled fantastic.

Room Tip: It may be worth paying that little bit extra for a double room if travelling alone as i do prefer a...

I have recently returned from the Cairndale Hotel and would highly recommend to any traveller to Dumfries, and I have tried other options. The hotel has a very freindly and helpful staff team, the atmosphere is welcome without being instrusive and the facilites are wide ranging. My room was clean and comfortable. U felt very at ease in this hotel and working away from home as a single female. Everything that matters was in place - and I will be returning.

Room Tip: Talk to the staff - thats all - if you want to know anything - they are more than keen to help I wa...

We visited this hotel in early November and took the two day B and B and Leisure Club deal. Our room was pretty small and the same I would say about the double bed. The night porter did tell us they have upgraded the superior rooms which we were told are bigger in all ways, so I might think again about visiting.
In hindsight we should have looked at an upgrade and even just to view a superior room would have given us the option.
If heading to Dumfries again I would look at the reviews to see where it sits

I was very pleased to hear how much you enjoyed your recent visit to the Cairndale.
As you have highlighted we have a number of room types in the hotel and prices can vary.
We are only too happy to offer our guests a range of rooms when checking into the hotel (if available ) and can often upgrade our guests at check in.

A good value hotel, still independently owned, in the middle of Dumfries. Prices are always reasonable and they will match any online price if you ask. We've stayed regularly over many years and the staff are always friendly and attentive. They have been gradually refurbishing the rooms for as long as I can remember but still some way to go. The pillows are tissue paper thin, for example, and the public areas have a period charm of the 1980s that really should be brightened up. The restaurant is decent and the buffet breakfast always well stocked.

it is always good to get feedback from regular guests in the hotel and to see them coming back to the hotel every year.
We are constantly striving to make improvements in the hotel ,and like the Forth Road Bridge there's always something to keep us going.
The most recent work undertaken in the hotel has been the refurbishment of 12 rooms in "Burnock" and these rooms are frequently requested by returning guests.
I was sorry to hear your feedback about the pillows in the hotel and I will make a point of looking into this. At present we provide extra pillows in all of our bedrooms and we are always happy to provide extra pillows ,or when guest have a particular preference change pillows accordingly.
Perhaps on your next visit you could contact us to ensure that everything is in place for your next visit.
