“My fears all squashed”
Reviewed 16 February 2013 via mobile

After reading a bad review which almost put me off booking I called Hotel to explain why bad review and Douglas on reception told me everything would be fine and that i would enjoy my stay at the Cairndale. After arriving the contact at reception was first class and soon in our rooms which were nice and clean we had a classic single and a classic double we decided to try the leisure club which was also nice and clean and friendly staff told us about a prob with the steam room which was waiting to be fixed . Everthing else was good the spa an sauna an pool were first class. The only downside was the towels they were so thin. Please renew asap . We also dined in hotel which was excellent great food and good service and reasonably priced. All in all a great stay and if son ends up in Uni here we will be back to the Cairndale .

I was delighted to find that you enjoyed your stay in our hotel and particularly your visit to our leisure facilities.
Your feedback about excellent food, good service and reasonable prices in our restaurant is very much appreciated.
As you have hightlighted reviews can often be misleading and it's sometimes better to just try a hotel for yourself.
When taking on board all tripadvisor reviews around 65% or 2/3rds of reviews for our hotel have rated the hotel "excellent" or " very good".

The starting point here has to be that we got a good room rate, so for what we paid, the stay was good value. We were in a large family room, which was spotless but dated. There's certainly no shortage of lights - you could carry out an operation on the coffee table with the number of light fittings in the room! The bed was comfy, the heating good, the decor tidy, the bathroom scrupulously clean...it just looks the way hotel rooms did 20+ years ago.

This continues with the public areas, and the mural to match the stair carpet is definitely one of a kind - you'll understand when you see it! The dining room and bistro are in need of modernisation too, but as with the rooms, they are clean but just a bit worn. We ate in Sawney Bean's and had breakfast in the restaurant, and thought the quality of the food was excellent. Dinner was delicious, and the selection at the buffet breakfast was extensive and regularly replaced, and the food was really good.

All the staff were friendly and efficient. Sorry I don't know your name, but the girl with the dark hair serving tables in Sawney Bean's has to be one of the hardest working people I've ever seen - she was everywhere!

Overall, the stay was good, and putting aside the dated surroundings, the location, cleanliness, efficiency of staff and quality of food couldn't be faulted. If I'm back in Dumfries, I'll be back at the Cairndale.

We have stayed at the Cairndale before and really enjoyed the hotel. The rooms are adequately furnished and ours was very spacious. We had free wifi which was also a bonus. Tea and coffee making facilities are very good. The hotel is spotlessly clean. The staff are very nice and very friendly. The leisure club is fab with sauna and steam room and was never very busy. What let our stay down was the food. The breakfast was good but on each day of our stay there was no fried eggs and you had to ask for these. The hotel wasn't busy so breakfast wasn't busy so breakfast should have been checked on a regular basis for empty dishes. The first day we were asked straight away if we wanted tea/coffee and toast. The second day the waitress passed us on several occassions and we had to ask for tea/coffee and toast she seemed busier clearing tables than attending to guest. We weren't the only ones who had to ask as two other tables had to ask as well. I know this is a minor gripe but the customers needs should come first. The dinner was in Sawny Beans pub downstairs and it was typical pub grub. In hindsight we wished we had just booked bed and breakfast and tried some of Dunfries's restaurants but the food had been so god the last time we thought it would be the same on this visit unfortunately it wasn't. We would return but on a bed and breakfast basis.

Room Tip: Go bed and breakfast

Thank you for some excellent feedback about your recent visit to the hotel.
I was sorry to learn of the problems surrounding breakfast it is always difficult to please everyone and our reason for not putting fried eggs on the buffet is to try and cook these freshly to order.

Reception staff were very welcoming and friendly and other staff were helpfull too.
The room was quite noisy it sounded like a plane flying overhead all night but some earplugs sorted that.
Breakfast is self service buffet with continental items and hot items too.
The bar for me was a problem, seems the downstairs bar is open until about 10pm and then they do not accept cash after 10ish but you can purchase drinks by putting on your room tab and also moving to one of the upstairs bars.
However the pool although small is good as is the Sauna and steam room also have a gym and there were quite a few local people who are members but it didnt seem overcrowded at all.
Location is quite good within 5 minutes walk of Dumfries town center but parking can prove to be challenging
Overall would stay here again because of leisure facility and location

I'm pleased to hear how much you enjoyed your recent visit to the hotel and that you found our staff welcoming and friendly.
I was obviously upset to learn of the problems with your room being noisy and your feedback would clearly suggest that there was a problem during your visit.
Although you haven't mentioned what room you stayed in I will certainly try and look into this further.
It is always helpful to know of problems ,and had this been highlighted at the time I would hope that we could have rectified things.
Despite the problem I was pleased to hear that you would stay again and it would be helpful if you could request a quieter room.

Bedrooms were fine and bed was comfortable but the public areas are timewarp central. Restaurant was closed so had to eat in the bistro which is basically pub grub - ok nothing special. Any restaurant serving Stowells as its house wine should be ringing alarm bells....
Playing loud 80s music on arrival for breakfast, which was quickly told to turn it off. Basic buffet type offering, again it was fine for what it was.

All in all, fine if you want a bed for the night but would not advise for dinner or breakfast.

It does have free wifi so again that was positive.

Room Tip: Some rooms face the road and some the back of the hotel. My room was backward facing and no road no...

I was not going to write a reviw because it is such a lovely hotel and wanted to keep it a little gem, but after reading the comments from a couple who siad the Xmas lunch was shambolic i have to comment,! were they actually staying in the Cairndale"!! We did a reckie on this hotel back in September time, it was very busy with a Dutch classic car rallie, but Dougie in partuicular took time out to show us rooms etc and we have a meal in the bistro and were most impressed, we have elderly parents and wanted to make sure they coudl get around. The hotel and staff from start to finish were fantastic, the food well..... it was fantastic, every meal piping hot, and gorgeous, the breakfast were fab also, entertainment great, especially Boxing Night - Abba wow, my dad is 83 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Only one small gripe which does not affect us young ones!, but all the evening meals were in the function room, our parents are elderly and found it not pleasant to go through a kitchen and outside in the cold before getting to the function room! Would we return most certainly, but without the parents! Cannot wait Thank you all for a lovely Christmas, we met some fab people and hope to see them again.

Room Tip: Starve yourselve before you go as the foof is fab!

I was delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your visit to our hotel over the Christmas period.
Your review is very much appreciated and i think it fairly reflects how well things ran in the hotel over the festive period.
It was fantastic to hear how much your parents enjoyed their stay and each year at Christmas we try to book entertainment that appeals to a wide audience.
Our Christmas programme for this coming year is currently being finalised and full details of our Christmas and New Year packages will shortly be highlighted on our website.

Stayed 3 nights over Hogmanay and have to say the Cairndale was an excellent choice. Staff friendly and efficient, food very good and always served hot. The entertainment over the 3nights was most enjoyable, all in all an excellent way to start 2013 ... Thanks to all concerned.
