“Enjoyable 2 night break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 November 2013

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Staff were very friendly and helpful, hotel public areas, room and restaurant were well decorated, clean and comfy. We had a ground floor room but were not affected by evening entertainment noise as it was during the week (might have been different if it had been a weekend). Our only complaints were the noise from an outside extractor fan which disturbed us at night and the only view from our room was over a corrugated roof where many cigarette ends had been deposited.
There was an adequate and satisfying choice for breakfast. We had one evening meal in the Reivers restaurant and had the 3 course special which was absolutely delicious, we could not fault it at all, our compliments to the chef and other restaurant staff.
We will return again, there are plenty of places to visit and explore in the area.

This hotel's rating is currently 3.5, but whether you give it more or less than that really depends on what you're looking for. We booked on a voucher deal for a couple of nights midweek in late October, as we wanted a base for exploring the area, with parking available, and good facilities as a backup in case of bad weather.

On these points, the Cairndale does the job. If we'd wanted a modern hotel that offered an affordable restaurant with good service that was open all week, we'd have been disappointed.

After originally being given a ground-floor room with an excellent view of the back of the hotel kitchen, we finally settled for a spacious, relatively quiet triple room (bigger than what we'd booked) in the main part of the hotel. The reception staff were polite and helpful in arranging this, including phoning to ask if we were satisfied with the alternative room.

The bed was comfy - maybe slightly on the soft side - the bathroom was large with a good shower over the bath, and although the decor was like taking a journey back in time, this is not really a big deal for us (as it seems to be for others) so we had no complaints.

Breakfast consisted of a decent continental selection and a hot buffet (hidden away in a corner of the vast restaurant, which we didn't initially even notice) which was reasonable but lacking the quality of freshly cooked food. Despite this setup, there seemed to be a lot of staff milling around not doing very much.

When it came to having dinner in the hotel, we decided to eat in Sawney Beans as this catered to our taste and budget; beware, though, that it is not open on a Sunday or Monday - when you will be abruptly directed to the pricey Reivers restaurant instead

Sawney Beans is located on the lower ground floor, accessed through a deserted bar area, and features an open kitchen lined with hotlamps which unfortunately looks and smells more like a local chippie. The service was about as courteous as that, too - while we watched the waitresses make an excessive fuss of the other diners, we were ignored all night and had the all-too-common struggle to get our bill at the end.

They also never explained to us the meal deal-type promotion they had on, which we only discovered when the bill eventually came and which might have influenced what we chose, had we been told about it. The menu choice and food quality itself were reasonable.

On the plus side, the leisure facilities are very good, with a reasonable-size pool and a well-equipped gym, plus the option of booking a spa session (although it seems the prices given in the book in the rooms are out of date, having gone up by 15%).

All in all, it was a good stay for what we needed and we enjoyed visiting some of the main attractions of the area, despite the unreliable weather. The town itself seemed very quiet, but perhaps it's more lively at the weekend or during the summer. The voucher price and the hotel's advertised advance rates are very reasonable, given the facilities on offer. However, it's unlikely that we will return.

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor (rooms 1-5)

We are regulars here once a year and always get a warm welcome . The desk manager Douglas is fantastic and as our usual room was unavailable this year we were upgraded at no extra charge to the four poster deluxe suite which was fabulous . The hotel is very central to the town and offers gym membership and spa facilities . We only do b&b which is adequate . It's the friendliness that brings us back here .

Room Tip: First floor is quiet and near reception

I am currently staying at the hotel on business. I have filled out the guest questionnaire and feel so strongly about some of the negative comments on here, that I must leave a review. I, and the company I work for, stay here regularly at the moment as we opening a new store In the area. How anyone can say that this hotel is substandard is completely bizarre!!!! It is an old building so the floorboards are going to make a noise, if your room is above reception then you may here people coming back in the early hours!! People complaining about the room being too warm in summer, really, is this the fault of the staff !!! First time I stopped I was in a king size suite and dare I say it was too big !!! I'm currently in a double room which is the perfect size. Breakfast is a lovely buffet style however fruit and cereal are also available. The hotel has 2, yes 2, restaurants which are equally nice. There is a small bar but the hotel is surrounded by pubs if you prefer. As for the staff I have never met such lovely people and I work in retail !!!! I have been to a lot of hotels on business and this one far out ways any I have been in. Well done and don't listen to the negative, petty feedback that some people feel they need to leave. Suited me down to a tea x

Just back from a great weekend at this hotel. I took my mum got a wee weekend break and we both loved it, The staff were excellent and very helpful, the first room we were allocated was a wee bit far from the lift for my mum (but it was a lovely room) the second room we were given was on the ground floor and was excellent too. The cabaret night was great but there was a lot of stairs to access the function suite from the interior of the hotel so we walked back round the outside of the hotel. all in all it was a nice break with excellent food. Thanks to all staff, only complaint was that the bedroom was too warm so we had to keep the window open and there was a bit of noise from the road still you can't have everything!

We had a voucher for a 2 night stay B&B and from the minute we left glasgow until we returned it rained, so we spent a bit of time at the hotel and we had nothing to complain about. From the start the staff were welcoming and accommodating, lending us a nice bucket and supply of ice. Our room was small but nice & well furnished with a new shower room. We ate in the hotel the first evening and it was very tasty home-cooked food, only the scotch broth was below par and the free wine was excellent Quality. We also spent sometime in the large lounge
and found it peaceful with a nice bay window in one corner, it obviously had had a recent makeover. The leisure facilities were good too, we made good use of the pool and sauna
We would return, and stay at the hotel again, it was good value and well situated

Booked three rooms for yearly trip away and went to. Abba tribute night. Had two year old granddaughter with us and staff were lovely with her especially Nichola at reception and Tom in restaurant. Meal was excellent and hotel spotless . Anything we asked for was attended to quickly. Was at 4 star macdonald hotel 4 weeks ago which wasn't,t a patch on this. Would definitely return. Great value for money. Jean glasgow
