“Lovely walk”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

Lovely walk to the castle with beautiful surrounding scenery. A good place to let your dog off lead - though watch out they don;t sneak through fencing as there is livestock close by

“Worth a Visit if You've Been to Drumlanrig Castle ...”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

... otherwise, only if you're passing.

It is very close to Drumlanrig. It is not well signposted, but we found it quite easily using a standard 4-inch-to-1-mile road atlas.

Although about half of the gatehouse is missing, you can still see most of the main structure of what was more of a fortified house than a true castle, and it is small, but impressively solid.

Standing on a small bluff, the castle overlooks a small loch, and has great views towards the hills, and down the valley in general direction of Dumfries.

Given the right weather (and it was grey and damp when we visited), it would be a good picnic spot, with added bonus of possibly seeing fisherman in a boat on the loch.

We were the only visitors there, and I rather doubt that it gets many at all.

“Magnificent views”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

Morton Castle sits on a triangular bluff with steep hills sloping down to the artifical loch (fishing with permit) beside it. The castle itself was triangular, it's a 12th Centrury castle and there is walkways leading to Fort Hills and Mottes close by. We had a lovely sunny day and took a picnic by the edge of the bluff and had a great day out. It was quiet and no other visitors about, due to the locale, it can be hard to find. Follow the A702 from Carronbridge, 2km until you turn East into a crossroads, on a one sided road with lots of passing places. It's an adventure in itself finding the castle. Highly recommend for fellow castle enthusiasts.
