“Fields of Stones”
Reviewed 13 October 2013

The 12 apostles (count them!) are way out in the hills in a lonely field. Worth a look although not huge. Why there I asked myself!

“The largest stone circle in Scotland”
Reviewed 22 July 2013

We love visiting some of the innumerable prehistoric sites in Scotland - especially stone circles which are off the beaten track and not often visited - for various reasons.
In the case of The Twelve Apostles stone circle, some visitors might be disappointed. Although the "largest" stone circle in Scotland, this fascinating circle owes its "largeness" to its diameter, not the height of stones. The circle is easy to find - but off the main road. No traffic. Easy to park near. Located in a large field on high ground. The location prompts one to wonder "why here?", "what was the purpose?" etc. - like other stone circles.
We visited on a day when it was pouring rain. The grass in the field was high and wet. The circle is most unusual - actually composed of eleven stones - one reputedly removed because it represented Judas (one old legend).
I will attach a picture - but it is hard to see the stones. One almost needs an aerial view. Individual stones are quite large - but far apart.

“Fascinating and a Remarkable Survival”
Reviewed 18 July 2013

Dropped in on the way home from Dumfries after spotting it marked on the map. Don't expect any facilities but it very much worth a visit. It's nearly intact - a farmer removed one stone many years back. It is very close to Dumfries in an unexpected locality.
