it was brilliant they had a very old camera which was worked by mirrors and it showed all of dumfries very close up. It was live and you could see the cars moving and the wind blowing the trees. It was fasinating to think something so old could be so effective

“What a museum - and a camera obscura!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

This is a regional museum, at the top of a hill. It incorporates an old windmill building, and is a museum has so much to offer. The Camera Obscura is well worth a visit, especially on a bright day when amazing views are to be seen of the town. Not all parts of the museum appeared to be easily accessible, but I may be wrong on this.
There is a very good scope of items in the museum, from geology, natural history, and local social and cultural history. It really is well worth a visit.
Last time I was there no entry fee was payable for the museum, but there is a small charge for the Camera Obscura which is at the top of the old windmill.
The staff are very helpful in answering questions, and giving other local information.

“Worth the hike”
Reviewed 27 May 2014 via mobile

Drag yourself up the hill for a treat. Loads to see in the museum hand outs for the kids that will keep them occupied finding things.
You pay extra for the camera obscura which is a guided 'tour'

Note to staff, just remember there is always somebody who can hear your conversations and not everybody wants to know about dog owners who allow their dogs to defecate in the grounds

“A great day out for all the family”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

When you are visiting Dumfries and you want an unusual but brilliant day out for your entire family then the visitor attraction that I am about to review is the place for you, and that place is Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura in Dumfries Scotland.

I visited the museum today and had a great time.

The highlights of the visit are the Curling Connections exhibition which is on to coincide with the World Senior Curling championships which are being held in Dumfries, the Dumfries a Royal Burgh exhibition on the first floor museum and the biggest highlight of them all, the Camera Obscura itself which is in the topmost floor of the museum.

Other good points of the museum are that the staff are friendly and the welcome is warm.

If you do visit the museum I would recommend going on a dry day as the Camera Obscura only operates weather permitting and the walk up to the observatory is exhausting, and I would recommend going as part of a group as the Camera Obscura presentation is more informative when you are part of the group.

Overall I enjoyed my visit
